    Love’s Recovery

“You are going to see Auntie Kit and Auntie Alice likely, but Mama B and I will try harder to have you either here or somewhere else where kids your age play.”

“Why doesn’t Auntie Alice ever go to work?  You could work where she does and then we could spend all day together.”

Tina couldn’t stop herself from the outburst of laughter that escaped her lips.

“If Mama T knew how Auntie Alice managed any of her life, you should be scared.”

“I asked Auntie Alice and she said it’s because she is extremely talented and not appreciated by the regular people.”

Tina stopped as she turned to face her daughter, not certain if she had heard her correctly.  However, with the smile that graced Angelica’s face, her answer was certain.

“That’s what Auntie Alice told you?”  Tina watched as Angelica nodded her head enthusiastically.  “What other wisdom has she bestowed upon you my daughter?”

    “What’s wisdom Mama T?”

“Just pick out your clothes and come to the kitchen.  I’ll help you get dressed,” Tina laughed as she walked away, catching the latter part of Bette’s conversation.  Tina instantly heard the tension in Bette’s voice as she argued with Phyllis.

“The Art Department frankly is the last one you should be worried about,” Bette began as she paced the length of the kitchen using her thumb to twirl her wedding ring around her finger.  “I’ve made my funding goal for this year and next.”

Tina could tell that Bette was becoming increasingly frustrated with the conversation and began to check her watch.   Tina tore her focus away from Bette, from her movements as she walked back and forth, so graceful despite the tension Tina could see developing between her shoulders.

“Hurry, Angie,” Tina urged as she poured herself a mug of the coffee she had set to perk early in the morning the night before.  “Clothes are required if you’re going to see Auntie Kit and Auntie Alice.”

Bette shut her phone, hanging her head, before briskly walking to the kitchen to join Tina for a few moments before she had to leave for the day.  She resented the interruption in her morning from Phyllis and began to resent her job once more, but one look at Tina and she found herself smiling as she watched Tina lean against the corner with a look of disgust at the taste of her coffee.

    1. Ah yes, I know those “Jillie’s”. They tend to multiply like pregnant rats on the floor. Nice Tibette dialoque – 2 adults trying to keep it all together. You must be setting us up for drama (LOL) because, it’s all smooth sailing. Nice, Gumby!

    2. Ah you got me with Jillie – I do believe my daughter owns a distant cousin with the same tendency of appearance. So Bette and Tina will be looking for a housekeeper and Maxine is looking for an opportunity! Hmmm. Great post. Thanks.

    3. I just caught up with your new story. Gumby, have you been honing your skills?? Your writing is even better than I remembered…..thanks for this story.
