    Love’s Recovery

“Is this where you tell me that Phyllis is nuts and you’re getting on the plane you thought you avoided late last week?”

“Not today,” Bette said, clearly not happy about the conversation that started her day.  “But Phyllis wants me to fly to Georgetown for a conference on marketing and funding specific to universities.  Why must she always push me?”

    “Because she pays you well?”

“Funny,” Bette said tilting her head and offering Tina a sarcastic smile.  “I can’t be the only department head that she sends all around God’s green Earth.”

“I thought you secured all of your funding?”  Tina sipped her coffee grimacing at the noticeable difference between her coffee and The Planet’s special brew.

“I did, but apparently I’m the department head she likes to flaunt.”  Bette fastened her cufflinks to secure her designer shirt, perfectly pressed and fitted to Bette’s body.

“Because you’re amazingly sexy or because you can woo anyone in your path?”

“Sending me because I’m a woman….” Bette began but was quickly interrupted by Tina.

    “A sexy woman.”

“..would be sexist and not something I would think Phyllis would engage in,” Bette finished.  “Maybe I’m just the fool that goes.”

“We need to talk,” Tina said hearing Angelica dragging her clothes and a rolling toy down the hallway toward the kitchen.

“If I can fly out and back in, it wouldn’t be more than a few days.  Believe me, I don’t want to go.”

Tina put up her hand to stop Bette’s train of thought.

“You’re going down the wrong path, Bette.  It isn’t about you traveling; it’s about the fact that the house is a mess after just two days and we both have so much going on at work.  We just can’t keep up.”

“Well this weekend we spent so much time with Angie in the pool.”  Bette fell back into her normal routine of offering excuses on why something had upset Tina.  Thankfully, Tina understood the reaction and instantly communicated more effectively her dismay.

“Babe I wouldn’t change that, but something has to give.  We never even discussed Angie’s school.”  Tina turned around and put her mug down to free her hands to assist Angelica with dressing.  She continued to talk as she pulled Angelica’s shirt over her head.   “Not to mention that with your demands at work and Aaron pulling up the shoot from next month we will barely be able to get a decent night’s sleep, let alone keep up with Angie and the house.”

    1. Ah yes, I know those “Jillie’s”. They tend to multiply like pregnant rats on the floor. Nice Tibette dialoque – 2 adults trying to keep it all together. You must be setting us up for drama (LOL) because, it’s all smooth sailing. Nice, Gumby!

    2. Ah you got me with Jillie – I do believe my daughter owns a distant cousin with the same tendency of appearance. So Bette and Tina will be looking for a housekeeper and Maxine is looking for an opportunity! Hmmm. Great post. Thanks.

    3. I just caught up with your new story. Gumby, have you been honing your skills?? Your writing is even better than I remembered…..thanks for this story.
