Matchmaker Alice challenge – I WILL SURVIVE

“In a way yes.  Being Gay wasn’t so hip then.  You know its funny the more out we all are the more we internalize all the things we use to share.  You know I’ve been on buses and trains were anyone playing a radio shared it with everyone.  Nowadays we all have our own tunes pumped through on little ear things that keeps us isolated from everyone else yet we share our most intimate details of the bedroom to all who will listen or see.”

“Ok now you’re confusing me are you trying to say you were gay in Philly back in the day and in order to come out you had to leave?”

“Oh sorry for my little rant but yes that’s what I’m saying.  I lived the picture perfect life, a husband, a child and the best house money could buy.  But we all know that if you’re not true to yourself you can never be happy.  I wasn’t happy.  The only happiness came from the time I spent with my daughter.”

In the middle of this conversation Alice is freaking out.  While she is getting the thumbs up sign from her producer she just knows that the odds of this being Bette’s mother are increasing by the millisecond.  Looking at her cell she doesn’t have a response from Tina yet.  Grabbing a piece of paper she writes out instructions to her producer to get Tina Kennard on the phone and tell her to tune into the show.  Nodding his head he picks up his phone and dials.

“Well caller I’d love to hear your view on those times.  Can I ask why you got married if you knew you preferred women?”

“First of all you make it sound like I had a choice.  I think every daughter wants to be a good girl.  I know I went a little rogue by marrying someone as different from me as night is from day.”

Alice quickly picks up on this as her eyes get big at the analogy.  “Are you saying you are black and married a white man or you are white and married a black man?”

    Silence.

“Caller are you still there?  Caller?  Well we seems to have a little difficulties with our caller.  Let me spin another 70s favorite from Diana Ross LOVE CHILD while I see where our caller went.”

    1. BRAVO Jwet! Wow, what a most creative, different and enjoyable Alice matchmaker story! The power that music and song has in connecting us to one another as well as evoking strong memories and feelings is truly an amazing thing. Okay, and being a musician I’m a total sucker for pretty much all the songs you mentioned too :) I almost didn’t read this one.. so glad I did. And I’m actually good with you leaving the story where you did. It’s nice sometimes to let ones own imagination fill in the “rest of the story” instead of always having it spelled out. Thank you for sharing your story. Very heart-warming!

    2. Wow Jwet!! This is amazing! :-D superb!! Uhm.. will there be any continuation (which would thrilled me!) or you’ll let our imagination take over?! :-/ … ;-p lol! Thanks for this wonderful story :-)
