    Melvin, Bette and Kit

“Okay, but not too early.” He says distractedly watching the entrance for any sign of Kit.

“Since when did you become a sleepyhead?” Bette teases. For as long as she could remember, her father had always been an early riser. “I do have to get back by 5:00 pm to get dressed. Tina’s being honored.” Bette fully expected her father to say something, but he just looked at her with a glazed look in his eyes. “Don’t you want to know why Tina’s being honored Daddy?” Bette asked filling the pregnant pause.

“Yes, certainly if you want to tell me.” Melvin couldn’t have been more disinterested. It was at that moment that Kit and Benjamin were led to the table by the hostess. “Katie…” he says standing up to greet her. “Daddy” Kit answers looking at her estranged father. They move towards each other awkwardly as they have not had physical contact in years. Kit’s boyfriend stands back and eyes Bette sitting at the table watching her sister and father. After what passes for a hug between them, Kit steps back and introduces her companion. “Daddy, I’d like for you to meet my friend Benjamin Bradshaw.

“Mr. Bradshaw.” Melvin extends his hands and Benjamin shakes it.

    “Nice to meet you, sir.”

After the pleasantries, Benjamin helps Kit to be seated then both men seat themselves. Kit greets her sister with a look and raised eyebrow. “Hey baby sis.”

“Kit.” Bette answers. Her expression mirrored her sisters. Neither one knew what to make of their father’s amicable manner.

After ordering and getting served, Melvin and Benjamin engage in a conversation about Benjamin’s work while the sisters busied themselves with the meal. “Now how did you conceive it, this ah theory of everything?” Melvin asked the younger man.

“Are you familiar with quantum physics?” Benjamin answered as a way to explain it.

“MM, oh then it is the unified field theory.” Melvin smiled knowingly.

“The unified what theory?” Kit questioned her father.

“Simply Einstein’s attempt to … explain the mind of God.” Melvin answers his older daughter.

“Well that’s a marvelous way of looking at it. It includes everything from creation to supernovas, to atoms…” Benjamin is obviously impressed.

“Even DNA. Our hearts, our minds.” Melvin continues.

“It’s really been working for me.” Kit interjects

“Did you tell your father about your business?” Benjamin asked knowing little about their estrangement. Neither Kit nor Melvin gave any indication that they had seen each other months before, but it certainly wasn’t a pleasant conversation about her new life.

“Business? What business?” Melvin asked with genuine interest.

“Well, Daddy it’s a café. I bought it from a friend of Bette’s.” Kit answers trying to diminish her success, but Bette won’t allow it.

“It’s not just a café. Kit has turned it into this swanky nightclub.” Bette boasts.

Melvin is about to say something, when he starts coughing. He takes the napkin and covers his mouth then takes a drink of water and clears his clears his throat, but the cough lingers. Finally, he excuses himself from the table. “I’ll be right back” he says and heads to the men’s room. Bette looks after him worriedly.

He comes back a little while later not looking so great, but assuring everyone that he was fine. He admitted to being a bit tired so they decided to make it an early evening. Bette, Kit and Benjamin walked Melvin to the hotel elevator. The men shook hands, and both daughters kissed their father on the cheek, bidding him goodnight. The plan was for Bette to pick him up in the morning, and they would meet Kit for breakfast at the Planet.
