”How come?” Bette sat up, the light teasing mood gone between them with Tina’s confession of Brenda. The brunette felt a pang of disappointment but she quickly ignored it. For the best, she was sure.

Tina shrugged as her eyes fell to the wooden table and a chip in the corner she found there. She shook her head before she laughed at the recollection of her embarrassing moment in front of Brenda and her friends. She hated that she had missed her chance with the blonde, hating herself even more for not lacking the ability to have been more confident with her approach.

”I fell all over myself. She probably thinks I’m some dork”

”Well you’re right about that. You are a dork” Bette smirked as she earned a slap to her arm before growing serious, sincere even. ”No but seriously .. that girl is an idiot. Anyone would be lucky to have you fall all over them”

A soft blush covered Tina’s cheeks as she dropped her head, suddenly shy. ”You’re just saying that”

Bette looked down at her hands, ”Actually, I shouldn’t be saying stuff like that”

Tina lifted her head, surprised at Bette’s words and met the brunette’s warm eyes. She was speechless, unsure of what to make of the confession. She was even more unsure of how to respond to it.

”Hey, I’m sorry. Should I come back?”

Both Bette and Tina turned their heads to the sound of the new voice, instantly recognizing the owner.

”Hey” Tina smiled instantly and Bette couldn’t help but glance at the excited blonde, ”No, it’s okay. We were just talking”

Brenda breathed a sigh of relief, a bright smile spreading across her face. ”Great. I just .. I just wanted to apologize for what happened earlier. My friends can be .. kind of rude”

”Don’t worry about it”

Tina waved a dismissive hand in the air as Bette continued to look on, not liking the situation.

Brenda shook her head, ”No, I’ve already spoken to them about it. I told them that if they ruined my chances with you then I was going to kick each of their asses”

Tina dropped her head as she let out a breath of laughter before looking up to meet Brenda’s beautiful eyes. Bette suddenly felt uncomfortable as she watched the scene unfold, no longer wanting to be there but finding herself unable to get up from her seat. She watched as Brenda flirted shamelessly with Tina, feeling helpless with the way Tina flirted back.

”So what do you think?” Brenda bit her lip nervously, unable to stop the smile that spread across her face. ”Are they getting their asses kicked or do I get another chance?”

Finding the strength to finally rise from her seat, Bette cleared her throat to make her presence known.

”I’m just gonna go check on the sound equipment”

Tina looked over to Bette, realizing that she had completely forgotten about the brunette. She felt guilty, ”Oh God, I’m sorry. Bette this is Brenda”

”Hey” Bette forced a tight lipped smile as she shook Brenda’s hand before looking down at Tina, ”I’ll catch you later”

She wasn’t sure what type of response she had expected but Bette knew that the one she received from Tina wasn’t it.

”Okay, see you later. Can’t wait to see you guys perform, you’re gonna do great”

“Thanks” Bette mumbled before flashing one more tight lipped smile at Brenda before walking away as fast as she could. She didn’t have the heart to stay and listen to Tina’s reply to Brenda though she was pretty sure she knew what the blonde’s answer would be.

For the best, she reminded herself with annoyance as she made her way toward the stage.
