No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Chapter 28
Bette eyed the phone as if it ringing had personally offended her. She didn’t want to answer it. After all that would mean coming face to face with the truth. This whole time Bette had been aware that Sara would die, but now she would have to say it. The words would have to come out of her mouth and somehow that would make it real.
Bette: Hello?
Ashley: Is this Bette?
Nothing on the other end.
Ashley: Excuse me. I’m looking for Bette Porter.
Bette cleared her throat out of instinct.
Bette: Um, yes. This is Bette.
Ashley: Hi, you don’t know me, but I’m Sara’s sister. She left instructions with my friend Jill to call you. Do you know anything about that?
Bette: Yes, Ashley I do. We need to talk.
The panic quickly filled Ashley’s voice.
Ashley: Where is Sara?
Bette: Can we meet somewhere?
Ashley: Where is my sister Bette?
Bette: I’ll tell you everything when I see you, I would rather not do this over the phone Ashley.
Ashley: Bette, I don’t know you and you don’t know me. Let’s not play games. Just tell me where my sister is so that I can speak with her.
Bette took a deep breath and proceeded cautiously.
Bette: Your sister, Sara, is very sick Ashley.
Ashley: What do you mean?
Bette: I really don’t want to do it this way
Ashley had lost all patience.
Ashley: God damn it Bette, what the ***** are you talking about and where is my sister?
Bette: She has cancer.
Ashley finally fell silent.
Bette’s voice now softened as she realized she was dealing with a young girl on the verge of losing her only ally.
Bette: She um, has been sick for a while but I guess she just didn’t want anyone to know. This was news to me too.
Ashley: How long?
Bette: How long did I know or how long
Ashley: How long does she have?
Bette: Days, hours maybe.
Bette was certain she heard a faint whimper pulse through the phone.
Bette: Ashley?
Ashley: Uh huh
Bette: You aren’t alone.
It was only a matter of time before Bette had assumed the role of big sister to Ashley. This was, after all, exactly what Sara was hoping for.

Why must the good ones always go first? I was expecting this to come up eventually, but wow flair. You did an amazing job. Sarah died the way she lived, and you perfectly portrayed that. Thank you.

Dear Rachel, even if what I’m crossing made me unable to comment anything for so long, for you I find the strength tonight to do it – ever if I cannot promise I’d be able to do it again.Because tonight I had to express few things, the best I can…I SO deeply agree with whatBetteAndTinaForever wrote : your story is such a gem. But I think you already know for a long time now that you were, you are and no doubt you’ll still be my favorite author here.I was ready to wait as long as it needed to see your name appearing again in the updates list, but you also knew it – don’t you ? Alas, when this so happy day came, my darker journey already began, paralysing all the best in me.I wished so much to express my total gratitude to all these wonderful authors here for the daily gift of their great stories – something that is more than ever an huge support in my life. One of the last.At least I finally bring myself together for a while to express it to you, my so talented queen of drama.BR>Do you have any idea how much your writer’s skins succeed on my mood tonight ? Because you simply made me cry rivers for something else but myself. And that, dear Rachel, is a true and powerful writing’s talent. As well as a life’s lesson. At last, let me also express how much I’m happy for you who finally gloriously succeed in the most essential audition ever, on life’s big stage, winning a shared love. I wish you the most beautiful life on this new “yellow brick road” : be happy, dear talented Rachel. That was what I hoped so much for you and I’m so delighted it happened.
