    No Me Ames; #15

Turning away, her breathing became steady as she drifted off into a sleep laced with the occasion sneeze and sniff.

The next morning, I awoke and got Becky ready for school before changing to go to work. I had decided to let Bette sleep in a little more because of last night.

“Baby,” I called out softly, shaking her gently, “It’s time to get up for work.”

Bette opened her swollen eyes partially; it was obvious that she was not feeling well. She coughed and managed a small smile at me.

I held my hand to her head and realised that she was running a temperature, “Bette, I think that we should get you to Doctor Michaels.”

Bette shook her head violently, “No,” she replied, “I don’t want to go…”

“Bette,” I pleaded, finally giving into my intuition, “Please, let’s just go and see if everything’s fine…”

“I don’t want to go,” she repeated, “If I go…I…I might find out that…”

“Hush,” I told her, stroking her hair as tears began to run down her cheeks, “There’s nothing to be scared about…you’ve been on the meds for so long now…I doubt that…that…”

The words couldn’t escape my lips, I was afraid that my words of comfort might turn out the complete opposite.

“Let’s just go,” I continued, “Come on.”

I helped Bette into a fresh set of clothes and brought her to my car. Fastening her seat belt, I reached for my mobile to call Tina.

    “Hello?” she answered.

“Hey, I’m sorry to bother you…”

    “No, it’s ok. What’s up?”

“I’m bringing Bette to the hospital now for a…a check up,” I said, my voice shaky with uncertainty, “I was wondering if I could trouble you to get Becky from school for me. I would ask Alice, but I know she’s busy catering a Christening today.”

“Sure, I’ll pick her up,” Tina replied.

“I’m so sorry to trouble you,” I said, starting my car up and backing it out of the driveway.

“No, don’t worry about it. Her school is near my work anyway.”

“Thanks, T, I owe you one.”

I dropped my phone into my bag, and looked at Bette, who was leaning against the glass window with her eyes closed.

While driving down the highway to the hospital, the only words that were running through my mind were, “Let it be nothing, please, just let it be nothing.”

    ◊◊◊

Bette was admitted and I found myself once again sitting in the familiar waiting area of the hospital. I buried my head in my hands, my long dark locks falling around me. I took a deep breath and looked up at the clock.

I had been sitting here for nearly three hours already.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming and I turned to see Doctor Michaels walking briskly towards me.

“Helena,” he said, his voice slightly urgent, “I’m afraid that I have some troubling news.”

“What is it?” I asked, preparing to hear the worse.

“We have found that Bette’s T-cell count has dropped…and there has been some other complications…”

“I don’t understand…it’s been four years…why are we back here again?!”

“I’m sorry but I don’t have an answer for that question at this moment. The medication seemed to be working but…this progress is inevitable. For some it takes about ten to twenty years for HIV to develop to this stage, but as I mentioned before, everyone’s body is different and now, it seems like…Bette…she has…”

“What?!” I asked, my voice slightly raised, “What bloody complication is there now?! What?!”

“Bette is showing that she has early signs of pneumonia…in her condition, it only makes it more complicated….”

I couldn’t hear the rest of the words.

I fell to the ground and completely blacked out.

    5. E, can I say you know how to pack a punch,,LOL….I am thinking that you better know how to block really good cause zheese is gonna hit,,haha with this latest chapter that you just posted. As much as I love these two characters in this story, and want everything to be perfect in reality nothing ever is,, and you have written it on how you see them and that is what counts. I loved this chapter cause there was love, love, friendship and then pain.

    6. Dang euni you’re killing me here. I love this story, but it’s truly depressing the hell out me. I hate to say this but will it be over soon? Because I don’t know how much my heart can take. You’ve done an excellent job in writing this. I just find it hard to read at times. But if you write more of it, I’ll read it. Thanks for the update.

    7. Well…do I dare say I’m glad the story isn’t ending soon? Eeks… I guess I’ll say I’m happy we will be able to read your incredible writing/story longer – despite the gosh awful pain inherent in the topic. I hope Helena can hang in there for Bette… It has to be so unbearably painful.
