Bette was excited about learning all the new technology and changes in the last hundred years. She felt the same overwhelming and exhilarating happiness as she did when she was a little girl and for the first time discovered different colors of the paints or when she heard her sister Katie singing for her in the garden. They were feelings of adventure, pleasure, excitement and anticipation.

Bette wanted to know everything and began asking about simple things, like the small items that Alice and Tina used to talk to the invisible people. Bette knew about the phones but those tiny things didn’t look anything like the devices that she had seen before.

This was the first time she had learned about the cell phones. It was so unbelievable and interesting to talk to somebody that could be on the other side of the world. Tina asked Bette if she wanted to try it and the look on Bette’s face made Tina almost forget what she had asked. It was an expression of terror, excitement, curiosity and pure delight. Bette practically jumped up and down in anticipation of using a new toy.

“Bette, you are such a kid sometimes,” Tina said, enjoying this new side of Bette, “Are you sure that you are a grown-up lady?”

“Tina, you cannot possibly understand what I am going through right now,” Bette answered with excitement, taking the cell phone in her hands and looking at it in amazement as if it was a magic wand. “This is a whole new world for me and I’m so grateful that you found the time to share this with me. Do you think you will be free sometime this week to teach me how to drive?”

“Bette, for you I will make myself free. I’m here for you always…just remember that,” Tina replied, getting as excited as Bette at the thought of spending every waking minute with the woman she loved with all her heart.

Tina showed Bette how to dial a phone number of the person and asked if Bette wanted to talk to Alice who went to watch Dana’s training session this morning. After Bette dialed Alice’s number, Tina told her to press another button with a green picture of a little phone handle and said, “Now you will hear some ringing and then Alice’s voice, so just wait.”
