It’s time for Tina to leave. She’s at the door with her luggage. She tells Bette it was a great speech, and that she’s going to make a great mayor. Bette thanks her but doesn’t sound convinced. Her voice is raspy. It’s apparent that the emotional stress of the day has taken toll.
“If you need anything. I’m here.” Tina assures her ex-wife
“Thank you.” Bette smiles tiredly
Tina taking a breath. “I am your family, you know.”
Bette nodding and smiling. “I know.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Come here” They hug tightly. Tina starts to pull away, but Bette holds on tighter.
“Please don’t go. Please.”
“Sweetie, I need to go. I’ll call you as soon as I check in at the hotel.”
“I don’t understand why you can’t stay here. We have three guest rooms. Angie would love to have you here when she wakes up.”
“And, I’ll be here. I’m coming back first thing in the morning. I’ll fix you both breakfast and we can spend the day together. She had an exciting day today with getting her driver’s license and her first kiss and all, but we need to have serious conversation about responsibility. Now more than ever if we’re thinking about getting her a car.”
“She was just acting out because of me Tina.”
“No, Bette. She cut school, smoked pot, turned off her phone and went off the grid for hours before she even heard about your scandal. Punching a girl at school? What the fuck Bette. Is this what I must worry about while I’m working in Canada with everything else going on. I don’t know why you didn’t tell me.”
“She and I talked. We worked things out.”
“Yeah, you took her phone. Great punishment.”
“You know, maybe it is better if you go to the hotel. Tensions are a bit high right now. I don’t want either of us to say something we might regret.”
“I think that’s best. I’ll call you once I get into my room and I’ll see you both tomorrow at around 9am okay?
“OK. Good night Tee. Thanks for today. I don’t think I would have gotten through it without you.”
“I’m sure you would have managed, but I’m glad I could be here for you. Just a word of advice?”
“Watch yourself. Angie is not the only one with a crush.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Your P.R. / Campaign Manager. She has the hots for you.”
“Dani? No way. She’s half my age and engaged to Sophie. She’s a producer on Alice’s show.”
“Well that may be, but even Pierce called her out. I’ve seen how she looks at you. That can only spell trouble.”
“Jesus, will it ever end.”
“Sorry Ms. Hotness. It’s a curse for being so gorgeous. No one can resist your Porter charm and I’m sure you’ve laid it on thick.”
“It’s just become second nature. I don’t even know when I’m doing it. I just wish it still worked on a certain someone.” Bette gives Tina one of her most seductive smiles.
“Oh, it almost did. You know I can’t resist vulnerable, needy Bette. ‘Please don’t go’?”
“OK but what about you with your ‘come here’ – you know what that does to me.”
“We’re not getting caught up in a moment that we will either regret tomorrow or we can’t come back from once we’ve started.”
“It’s never just a moment between us Tee. You know that.”
Tina’s cell phone buzzes. She glances at the screen.
“My Uber’s here. Good night babe. I’ll see you in the morning.” Tina kisses Bette’s cheek then heads down the driveway dragging her roller board.
“Shit, did she just call me babe?” Bette smiles and walks into the house locking the door and setting the alarms. She grabs a bottle of wine and a glass from the kitchen. Heading to her bedroom she removes her clothes and takes a quick shower. She pours the glass of wine and gets into bed with her cell phone as she awaits Tina’s call.
