Power Moves
Joyce steps forward, heels clicking sharply on the polished floor. Her voice is calm, deliberate—each word chosen like a precise incision. “Mrs. Adams-Porter would have this court believe she acts out of concern for her child’s emotional welfare. But concern, under California law, is not a feeling. It is not discomfort. It is not resentment disguised as vigilance.” She shifts slightly, the fabric of her suit whispering against the chair. “It is evidence.”
Her gaze scans the room, landing on the judge. Then she lifts a finger—no accusation, just a gentle mark in the air. “There is no evidence before this court that Ms. Kennard poses any risk—emotional or otherwise—to the minor child. No police reports. No CPS referrals. No therapist declarations. No expert testimony. No documented incidents. Nothing.”
She pauses, voice dropping. “What is present, however, is a pattern. A pattern of selective outrage. A pattern of retroactive moral concern. And most notably, a pattern of behavior consistent with post-dissolution hostility, not parental protection.”
Kelly rises again. “Objection—speculative.”
Joyce does not look her way. “Your Honor, speculation would require uncertainty. This record is painfully clear.”
The judge exhales, releasing the tension in her shoulders. “Overruled.”
Joyce inclines her head again. “Mrs. Adams-Porter facilitated her son’s exposure to an extramarital partner—someone with no legal standing or long-term role in his life—without objection, without safeguards, and without any demonstrated concern for emotional continuity. Now she seeks to weaponize the concept of ‘stability’ against the other legal parent, depriving this child of the consistency, affection, and parental bonding he clearly shares with Ms. Kennard.”
She steps back, letting the weight of her words settle in the hushed courtroom air. “That is not co-parenting. That is retaliation.”
Michelle’s hands curl into fists.
Joyce continues. “Your Honor, courts do not exist to adjudicate unresolved feelings from a failed marriage. They exist to protect children from harm. And when a petitioner conflates personal jealousy with legal detriment, the result is exactly what we see here—a frivolous action that wastes court time and undermines the seriousness of genuine custody disputes.”
She closes her folder. “My client has complied with every term of the custody order. She has fostered the child’s relationship with the petitioner. She has exercised sound parental judgment. There is no legal justification. None, for modifying custody or restricting exposure to her partner.”

And that is what Bette already warned you about Michelle if you were foolish enough to go through with this and bring this to court.
You lost everything and it’s your own fault.
Love how Bette & Tina entered the courtroom, hands linked together, fully in support of each other. The support from their friends and especially Kit who supported Tina. Don’t feel guilty anymore Tina, Bette forgave you, it’s time to move forward and i like Bette’s idea to sell the house and look for a new home together.
I love this story, hope to read a new chapter soon.
Happy to see new chapter. Thanks for that.
So happy that you posted another chapter of this great story. Beautifully written as always! Please continue.
Oh my! I was on the edge reading the updates. I love Bette in this version. Hope she doesn’t go soft and stick to her word. I like the other version but that Bette frustrated me how she was always talk and no bite. The Bette in the rewrite oh my – she ROCKS!!! standing on business.
