Put it up to your ear…what do you hear…Chapter 6

    “Huh…….fine…busy…normal…crazy. Why, what’s up?”

Eric held the phone to his ear, staring at the ceiling in his office, both proud of Tina’s position at Alphaville, and at the same time, resentful of the amount of time it demanded of his girlfriend.

“Not much. Just wondered if you wanted to get together for dinner?”

Tina ran her hand through her beautiful blonde tresses, and sighed. “I can’t tonight. I have tons of scripts that need reading…and I have to prepare annual reviews for fifteen different people, all by Thursday…” She let out a big breath. “Which means I only have the rest of today, and tomorrow. How ’bout Friday?”

Eric could feel his neck turning red from frustration. “Fine Tina…fine. I’ll see you Friday…good-bye.”

“Hey…hey.” Tina responded quickly, not wanting Eric to hang up like that…sensing his frustration. “What’s the matter? You know things are busy right now. What’s going on?”

It was Eric’s turn to run his fingers through his dark brown hair. “What’s the matter? You’re kidding right Tina? Hmmm…maybe it’s because I haven’t see you for almost a week! And, even though I miss you terribly, you don’t seem to even notice that amount of time has gone by.”

The twenty-five year old development executive, stared out the window, knowing this conversation was going to happen at some point. It always did, but all the same, just wishing it didn’t have to.

“Look Tina, we have been through this before. I feel like I am just here to provide you with polite dinner conversations every once in a while, and an occasional romp in the hay…and that’s it. We don’t ever seem to move beyond that, and it’s driving me crazy.”

    No response.

    “Tina?”

The emotionally exhausted woman brought her mind back into the conversation, wishing she could give Eric what he wanted from her…but knowing that she couldn’t. After all, she hadn’t been able to give it to Dave…her wonderful, strong, loving Dave, whom she had, at one point wanted to marry more than anything…how could she have ever thought she could give it to Eric.

“Eric please…do we have to have this conversation over the phone…and when I am at work? Can’t we talk about it on Friday? I promise…we will have the whole evening to ourselves…good food…great *****…and lots of talking. Okay?”

It was Tina’s turn to listen to the silence on the other end of the phone. “Baby, you know I love you, right? It’s just a really crazy time at work…but, I promise I will make it up to you on Friday.”

Eric sighed with resignation into the phone. “Okay…Friday…just you and me. And Tina?”

    “Yeah?”

“Come prepared, cause I really need to have a conversation about us…….well…..and your inability to commit. Okay?”

Tina closed her eyes, already thinking of what excuses she could use to explain this major flaw of hers…her “inability to commit.”

Yeah, okay. I love you babe.”

“I love you too, Tina. See you Friday.”

    “Bye.”

Once again Tina stared out the huge floor to ceiling window in her office, trying one more time to understand what had changed for her approximately five years ago, and turned a woman whose dream it was to marry, and have a family with Dave, into a woman who broke two hearts when she decided that she just couldn’t make that final step.

Poor Dave. He had been absolutely brokenhearted…as was Tina. She had been so in love with the sensitive, and muscled bound football star, and wanted nothing more than to make movies, be his wife, and the mother of his children. She had no problem with commitment back then. In fact, she adored being committed to one person, and actually looked forward to the challenge of juggling a career with a family. But, something happened…something she couldn’t quite put her finger on…and ever since, she had balked when it came to making a commitment…at least the relationship kind. She had no problem being committed to her work…and enjoyed wonderful, fulfilling friendships. But, when it came to a romantic relationship, she could only go so far…give so much before she started to panic, and needed to be free again.

God, she wished she understood what had changed for her…wished she could let go of whatever it was, because until she did, even though she wasn’t physically alone, her heart…her soul were lonely………very lonely.

    3. Welcome back and thank you so much for posting – what a great, wonderful and sad post. I like the twist with Tinas commitment issues and Bette probably is having the same issues…because they haven’t meet their soulmates yet. I’m so hooked – please post as often as possible.

    4. Wow, guess you know we all missed you! It’s great having you back. Great post, can’t wait for your next one. Thanks for dropping us a post when you can.

    5. Admittedly, I didn’t anticipate a leap of five years into the future. That’s one of the things I enjoy about your writing – you don’t follow any particular formula. Now you’ve given us a great back story to work from – perfect as usual! Look forward to much more of this story from your talented self.

    6. so glad to read your story today – your writing voice is so rich, the emotions so vivid, thanks for the depth even if it means we must wait a bit between chapters.

    7. Miss Unpredictability: Didn’t we just have a nice little chat about this highly addictive tale you’ve got here? You’re leaving me hanging sweetie and all I can say is (tapping foot on floor) your writing flows so easily that I can’t help but follow it. Just whistle when high maintenance Eric has been kicked to the curb and one Bette Porter pulls up. Always a pleasure Sea…

    8. Great to see that you’re back and you’ve posted another wonderful chapter, Seahurst. Does Tina’s non-committal behaviour to relationships have anything to do with that ‘giggle’ from the seashell? And that grown up, sexy version of her ‘giggle’ she heard 5 years ago at that party? Looking forward to when she hears the giggle again and be able to meet the owner of that giggle.

    9. wow is all i can say. can we all say, bette. she needs a bette. fergz baby, what a night. my trainer killed me. i need a drink but you have to bring it to me. k. thanks sea, it was lovely as usual. lets just get rid of eric now and not later. thanks.

    10. Looks like things are happening right on schedule for Bette and Tina. :) Thanks for the update, Sea! Can’t wait to find out how exactly you’ll have Tina discover the one behind “the giggle.”

    12. OMG! YES!!! You’re back! I am loving this! Thanks for posting. I have a big smile on my face! This is a great start to my busy morning! Yipppppiiiiieeeeeee!Hmmmmm, I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when Tina and Dave broke it off. I wonder what happened with Tina back then, to be shy of commitment. Could it have been a certain ‘giggle’ or what? What does the seashell say?I anxiously await the next chapter of this story. So far, I cannot say enough good things about it! I have been captivated, enthralled, and simply hooked since the first prommising chapter months ago. Great storyline, Sea!

    13. Ok Sea I don’t know what I can say that has not been said before…so here are some repeats…I love your story…I am so glad that you are back and I will wait as long as you need me to for the post, but I would really love to read it so please don’t make me and all the people who love reading your stories wait too long…Thank you for writing you truly made my day

    14. Hi Sea – I may be wrong (and hope that I am), but it seems that you are fighting with this story a bit…maybe trying to decide which angle to go to bring it all together. I wish it would flow as easy as your first story for you. My point is I want you to know that we really appreciate when you post a story. I love your style and storylines and hope this is all a joy for you and not a writer’s block fight. By the way, I like the new twist you have thrown in here – great chapter (as usual).

    15. finally you’re back…how’s England treating you” i hope good because this chapter is great, can’t wait for B&T to meet again, please make it be soon…i adore this story
