    Real Tibette – Thanksgiving 2023

‘I’m starving,’ said Sasha, idly kicking a clump of grass.

‘We’ll be in in a minute,’ said her mother.

And they were. Bette opened the door, flipped on the light and suddenly the cabin was transformed. Gone was the forbidding black rectangle; in its place a homely geometry of cute little windows filled with cosy amber light.

    ‘Yay!’ grinned Sasha.

Tina high-fived her daughter’s raised hand, and then everyone set about getting the stuff in from the cars. As they went back and forth, they theorised about what had gone wrong. Tina’s surmise was that Karl, whom she’d asked, had probably assumed Nora would do it, and Nora was a flake.

Bette just grunted, then said, ‘Can you do something about him?’

Tina looked where her wife nodded, and saw Solly on his belly in the middle of the hallway, staring at the basement door.

‘Sol?’ she called. The little spaniel’s ears twitched, but he didn’t move, so Tina just stepped over him and carried on helping Kit to fill the fridge. Sonny went round switching on heaters, first upstairs, then in the living room and kitchen, and then finally the basement.

Ben was walking past when Sonny opened the door.

    ‘Jesus!’ he exclaimed, backing away.

    ‘Oh, wow . . .’ Ben added.

Tina, who was nearest, called out, ‘What’s going on?’

Ben came back into the living room covering his mouth and nose with the sleeve of his puffer jacket. ‘That’s disgusting!’ he said.

‘What’s happening?’ asked Sasha, coming down the stairs.

‘Raccoons’d be my guess,’ said Sonny, glancing down the basement stairs whilst trying not to breathe.

‘What is it?’ asked Bette, coming in from outside. Then the stench hit her like a punch in the face. ‘Ohmygod, what the hell is that?’

    ‘Rac—’

Sonny’s reply was cut off by the lights flickering, then a brief buzz, an audible bang, and the cabin being plunged into darkness.

Sasha squealed. Kit said, ‘Oh Lord.’ Everyone else just stared at each other’s silhouettes. On instinct, Sonny slammed the basement door shut. And then Tina’s voice . . .

    ‘Solly? Ohmygod . . . Where’s Sol?!’

    ‘Tee—’

‘SOLLY!’ She hurried to where Sonny was standing. ‘Where is he? Did he go down there?’

‘He’s fine,’ said Bette, struggling with the flashlight on her phone.

I correct the previous comment . . . DISagree that U have been “arrogant” by calling this masterpiece as “REAL”. Pfff! It certainly I S that!!!
