Tina walked into the conference room two hours later and there sat Jodie Lerner and her interpreter, Tom. Jodie fucking Lerner, Tina thought. Soon after Martin arrived, still skittish around Tina. He had bundles of drawings in his hands and a flash drive for the projector.
Tina placed her laptop on the conference table and poured herself a coffee before addressing the room, “thank you all for being here, we are waiting on one more person then we can begin the meeting”.
Across town, Bette had already been on the phone with two key board members and was waiting to hear from the third. James popped his head in, “got you in with Kelly in an hour and a half” he gave her a thumbs up and Bette waved him away when the phone rang. Let the negotiations begin, she thought and took a deep breath.
Fifteen minutes passed, then twenty. Tina sat calmly, the picture of patience but inside her stomach was in knots and she was physically nauseous. Where the fuck was Elena? Jodie sat calmly too, a smirk on her face as she signed quickly with Tom, a couple gestures Tina was pretty sure were about her.
Martin finally got the projector working and dimmed the lights to start the presentation when the door swung open and in walked Elena. She took a step back when she saw Jodie and Tina was surprised to see Jodie narrow her eyes. Tom begin signing furiously.
Bette hung up with her fourth board member and pulled a folder out of her briefcase. “Make two copies James, use my copier in the art room office. Put the copies back in this folder when you are done. Make sure you come back with all the papers. All, James. This is sensitive information, understand?”
Elena glanced around the room and walked to sit next to Tina, the conference room door looming open and a tense silence filling the air. Tina made the introductions, finding the behavior between Elena and Jodie increasingly odd. Then, to make things even stranger, Aaron walked in with an art intern to shadow the entire process. “Start the presentation” Tina barked at Martin, who leapt up and begin.
Bette walked into Kelly’s office and sat at the small table in the corner. Kelly bustled around for a minute or two, oblivious to the change coming her way. When she sat down, Bette pulled the folder James had handed her out of her briefcase and Kelly smiled. “Great!” she said, “glad your wife let you sign the papers finally”. Any hesitation Bette had disappeared with that comment.
“These are papers announcing my intent to buy you out, Kelly. I have a quorum with the board tonight and signed letters of approval from over half. I will give you until 5:00 to accept my terms”.
Tina passed out the schedule and timeline for the project as well as the work assignments. They deliberated the details for a while with Martin taking the lead now that the discussion was under his scope. Elena only had a few questions, but they were good ones and she was able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the task at hand. Jodie seemed eager to get the meeting over with.
Bette texted Tina, “Paperwork has been delivered. I made reservations at 7:30 – Marcos, our table. Board meeting before. Meet there xoxo”. Tina responded, “So proud of you. There is good”.
Afterwards, Tina pulled Elena into her office and shut the door. “Spill” she said, her arms
“I know that person…that Jodie person…she stole my idea at the convention, I know she did…”
Coming up: Bette finds out about Elena and has a surprising response….
