Patty “Holtzmann’s makin’ a play for you!”
Earlier while dancing, Erin finally felt a sense of confidence about this building attraction for Jillian, but now enough time had set in for the nervousness to take back over.
Erin “I… I don’t know if I’m ready to have this conversation right now. I mean we’ve got lunch. A possible apocalypse coming.”
Patty laughs, keeping her eyes on traffic.
Patty “Man, we deal with that shit everyday. This is more important. I mean what, you ain’t feelin’ anything right now?”
Erin “Um… sense of panic. Kinda nervous. Not sure what’s gonna happen to us if things go wrong…”
Patty “Hey, gloom girl I ain’t talkin’ about the readings.”
There is a slight pause as Erin can feel a knot in her throat. Her eyes turn to her friend and colleague who is driving, the rest of her head following.
Erin “…I’m not talking about the readings.”
Patty quickly shoots her eyes over at Erin and sees the look on her face before focusing back on the road.
Patty “Damn. Y’all both got it bad for each other.”
Erin “Oh my god!!!”
Patty “Hey hey hey hey! That ain’t bad, Erin! Why you panickin’ about this so much?”
Erin “I don’t know I mean I admit I’ve found certain people attractive before and it’s not a big deal like-like-like… like Kevin!”
Patty “Shit, everybody knows about that. ‘Cept Kevin.”
Erin “But Kevin was different! I thought he was cute. Handsome! And he is! I mean, he is isn’t he?”
Patty “Yeah he’s alright.”
Erin “Okay then, but… He’s not what I want. I’m getting more into adulthood now. I spent my school years, college years… most of my Columbia years teaching… just… being all about science. I think I missed the wild dating phase of my life and I think when I saw Kevin, I was reminded that that was a thing that maybe was supposed to happen in my life. I just missed it.”
Patty “Erin, you can never miss-”
Erin “Patty, please. I missed that phase of my life. And you know what? I think I’m fine with that.”
Patty “Then what’s wrong?”
Erin bites her lip.
Erin “It’s not about that with Jillian. And… I just hope that she doesn’t think that’s what this could be. It’s more than that when I see her, I just wanna not…”
