    After two years, Shane and Carmen finally run into each other at a health food store.

    Shane continues: “Jenny wrote a story called ‘Lez Girls’ that is being made into a movie. It is not so loosely based on all of our lives. I mean she changed the names kinda. My name is ‘Shaun’.”

    Carmen: “Oh good lord!”

    Shane: “After ….. (her voice trails off and she looks away) Mrs. Peabody took her money from Helena and left her broke. Helena hooked up with this woman and they were making a lot of money playing poker. But Helena never got any of the money. So she took it and got arrested. She spent about a month in jail before her mother finally got her out. She left the country with the woman she hooked up with in jail. Helena came back to the states when her mother got sick. That’s when she and Kit bought Shebar together.”

    Carmen: “So Mrs. Peabody took her money back because Helena paid for our … the wedding?”

    Shane: “Yeah.”

    Carmen: “You just spread the misery around don’t you Shane?”

    Shane doesn’t respond.

    Carmen: “So what about you? What have YOU been up to?”

    Shane: “Well, I worked on the set of Jenny’s film and I’m thinking of getting into photography.”

    Carmen: “That is not what I mean. Are you WITH anybody?”

    Shane: “No, I’m not with anyone. I had a girlfriend but her mother …  Alice told her mother about me, us, the wedding (Shane’s voice trails off again) and her mother told me to break up with her daughter.”

    Carmen: “And you did?”

    Shane: “I didn’t want to hurt her. I never wanted to hurt anyone, ever!”

    Carmen: “What’s her name?”

    Shane: “Molly.”

    Carmen: “What about Cherie Jaffe?”

    Shane: “That was over before it began, honestly.”

    Carmen: “So let me get this straight. You leave woman, some at the altar, because you don’t want to hurt them?”

    Shane: “Carmen, I really and truly don’t understand why I do what I do. But I never want to hurt anyone, never, ever.”

    Carmen: “Yeah, somewhere I heard that before. That really is insane Shane. You….. we need therapy?”

    Shane looking surprised: “You’ll go to therapy with me? If you come with me, I will pay for it?” 

    Carmen: “Where are you getting that kind of money?”
