As Bette pulled into the driveway of her house she peered into her rear view mirror, Tina was only a few yards behind her, following her to the home they once shared. Bette turned off the car and got out, waiting for Tina to do the same. After Tina carefully hoisted herself out of her own car, she walked over to meet Bette, quietly following her up the side steps to the front porch.
“You feel okay?” Bette asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine, I’m just kind of cumbersome these days.” Tina laughed.
“You’re beautiful,” Bette reached over and gave Tina’s belly a small pat.
Bette unlocked the door and they both walked into the house. She wondered if it was strange for Tina to be back here, she hadn’t stepped foot in their home since she stayed for a few days four months ago.
“You want anything to drink?” Bette asked, “I might have some orange juice.”
“Bette, if you have any orange juice in that refrigerator, I probably bought it and I am sure it has expired by now.” Tina replied.
Bette looked towards the kitchen, “Yeah, you’re probably right. How about some water? That doesn’t go bad.”
Tina laughed, “No, no I’m good for now.”
“Okay…” Bette just stood in their living room, unsure of what to do next.
“Come here,” Tina reached for Bette’s hand, “Sit down with me.” Tina pulled Bette towards the couch. They sat down on the couch–leaving little room between them. “You know, the last time I was here I really thought I would be staying…” Tina spoke first.
“I hoped you would… but I kind of messed that up.”
“No, no you didn’t. It was the right thing for us at the time. We weren’t ready, I wasn’t ready. I knew in my heart that we shouldn’t get back together, but I was just so lost and still so deeply in love with you that I was willing to risk it just to feel normal again.”
“You feel different now?” Bette asked. “Yeah, I do… we needed this time apart, Bette. I needed to know that getting back together with you had more to do with how we feel about each other and less to do with what was easier. But one feeling hasn’t changed.”
