Tina didn’t look amused. Bette held out her hand
“Come to Bette “
“No “
“Come on – come and get a hug “
Tina got up still looking unhappy. But she walked across and took Bette’s outstretched hand. Bette pulled her down so she was sitting beside her.
“What have we agreed ?”
“That we were not going to let anything get to us – not your mum’s crazy over the top plans or my family or not being able to get in touch with Alice or the fact that we haven’t found an outfit for either of us yet”
“And why did we agree that ?”
“Because all that matters is that you and I are together next Saturday saying our vows to one another – nothing else matters”
“When you and I are showing our ten grandchildren pictures of their grand-parents wedding they will not know or care that their great grandparents weren’t sitting together or that crazy Auntie Alice wasn’t there or that our outfits were not decided on until ten hours before the ceremony “
“Don’t say that about the clothes “
“It doesn’t matter – you matter and I matter. We are going to tell our gathered family and friends – as in the people who managed to get themselves to the ceremony – we are going to tell those people that we love each other and that we are going to spend our lives together “
Tina exhaled and flopped down so she was facing Bette. She touched her face and kissed it gently
“I know – I know that you are right but that doesn’t stop me getting wound up by all of this “
“Okay – take some deep breaths – remember that you were the one who taught me to chill out. I used to get so stressed until you showed me how to breath to calm myself down. You know that meditation has really changed me – you showed me all of that Tina”
Tina smiled “I should be practising what I preach “
“You should – there has to be some advantages to being brought up by hippy parents other than them never getting cross when you smoked pot “
Tina took a couple of deep breaths – it did make her feel better. It always did – so why was she letting the stress get stronger and more toxic ?

Is Melvin going to show up at some point in this story? Tina confronting him would be interesting. Protective Bette is nice, but a fiery, protective Tina would be great.
