“I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t like Christmas. Well, except for Scrooge but he’s not a real person.”

“What’s the big deal? So I don’t believe in
Christmas. I don’t believe in many things. I don’t think I believe in
    anything, really.”

Tina and Bette were walking hand in hand through the
jogger’s path that passed close to their home. As was the newly
established routine they had agreed upon, Tina got up at dawn, jogged
one round, then returned to the house to wake Bette up. Then Bette and
Tina walked another round. It was the only compromise Bette was willing
to make between her desire to sleep in during weekends and Tina’s
enthusiasm for exercising together. Although Bette wouldn’t admit it,
she found walking with Tina very pleasant. It gave them the opportunity
to have conversations that they would never have thought to have.

That Christmas morning didn’t diverge too much from
their habit. Tina woke up, looked upon the small but festive tree that
she’d brought home two days ago, and smiled in excitement at the stack
of presents under it. Then she changed into her jogging suit and went
out for a run. Thirty minutes later, Bette staggered out of the bedroom
in her own suit that matched Tina’s and sleepily got Tina a glass of
water. Barely a minute passed then Tina was letting herself into the
back door, breathing hard and sweating from her vigorous run. Bette
handed Tina the glass of water, which Tina gulped down quickly, then
    they both started their walk.

“Aren’t you even a little bit excited?” Tina was
prodding Bette gently. They had only just started their walk when Bette
playfully chided Tina for hopping like a child along the path. Tina
defended herself by saying, “It’s Christmas! I’m really happy.”

Bette had replied, “Christmas? That’s why we have the tree and the presents and the dinner tonight, right?”

“Of course!” Tina was grinning giddily, barely noticing that Bette was scowling.

“Tina, I agreed to all those things because you
wanted them. But you don’t have to be so happy about Christmas. After
all, it’s just another day.” Bette was surly.

Tina put her arm through Bette’s and hugged her
partner’s sweater-clad side. “Yeah, it is a day but It’s hardly ‘just
another day’! It’s a day for showing friends and family how much you
love them. How much you value them. That’s why we give them gifts!
Because we want them to be happy, like we are.”

    1. That was beautiful and disarming. What we believe to be true and what we have blind faith in can be totally different — depending on our perspective. However, LOVE is a factor that eludes time, space, and dimension…it’s everywhere and nowhere…it just is. Thanks for the update and for the poem…it was lovely. Merry Christmas.

    2. Wow! I am so blown. At first I thought it was the echo of voices in my head. But it actually was your story that did it. I am one of those people who don’t believe in a lot of things. Everything is relative. Nothing is absolute. And absolutely made my day, relatively speaking. Cheers!

    3. And I believe in Love. And I know that you do too. And I believe in some kind of path. That we can walk down, me and you. So keep your candlew burning. And make her journey bright and pure. That she will keep returning. Always and evermore.
