“This way’s closer to where I am. We’re at about
exactly the midpoint of the path. Where you are, that direction’s
closer to the house. Where I am, this way is.”

“Alright Tina. So come on, let’s go.”

“Why don’t you come over here?”

“But… but…” Bette shook her head in confusion. “What?”

        “Let’s take this way.”

“But… huh?” Bette was still totally confused.

“Why can’t you come over and take the path I’m asking you to take?”

“Because that’s not… We’re supposed to…” Bette paused and frowned up at the trees lining the path.

“Relativism, Bette. If you really do believe in
relativism so much, you wouldn’t be so inflexible, now would you?”

“Inflexible?” Bette was suddenly wary. Tina was in one of her crafty dangerous moods.

“Do you believe in me, Bette?”

Bette didn’t hesitate. She knew the answer even before she knew the question. “Yes. I do.”

“Am I one of your ‘movable truths’?”

Bette remembered that conversation, not a few weeks ago.

        “Yes.”

“Then come over and let’s go home. This way.”

Bette looked at the path in front of her. Then she
looked at the path behind Tina. In her mind, the former was the better
way to go since it was closer to the house and it was also a fresh
vista. The latter path seemed more beaten down, more weathered. Bette
didn’t want to change course. She never have and she didn’t want to.

But there stood Tina, waiting. With a deep sigh, Bette walked over to Tina and linked their arms together.

“Let’s go home, Tina.” Bette murmured. “We need to finish decorating the tree.”

“Okay Bette.” Tina responded but didn’t take a step.
When Bette turned to her questioningly, she saw that Tina was just
looking at her with that achingly naked look in her eyes.

“Bette, I love you.” The words and the look told
Bette everything she ever needed to know. They answered every prayer she
had ever uttered. It spun magic around her.

For better or worse and for whatever else will happen, Bette Porter totally and completely believed.

        “Tina, I love you too.”

Bette and Tina walked hand in hand back to their
home. Bette practiced mouthing some words as Tina surreptitiously
observed her. Back at the house, Tina’s curiousity was gratified when
Bette faced her, took a deep breath and said, “Merry Christmas Tina.”

    1. That was beautiful and disarming. What we believe to be true and what we have blind faith in can be totally different — depending on our perspective. However, LOVE is a factor that eludes time, space, and dimension…it’s everywhere and nowhere…it just is. Thanks for the update and for the poem…it was lovely. Merry Christmas.

    2. Wow! I am so blown. At first I thought it was the echo of voices in my head. But it actually was your story that did it. I am one of those people who don’t believe in a lot of things. Everything is relative. Nothing is absolute. And absolutely made my day, relatively speaking. Cheers!

    3. And I believe in Love. And I know that you do too. And I believe in some kind of path. That we can walk down, me and you. So keep your candlew burning. And make her journey bright and pure. That she will keep returning. Always and evermore.
