    “Your gallery is beautiful”

     CHAPTER 6

     

     

    Tina stood in front of the Porter Gallery trying to work up the nerve to enter.  It had been two days since Bette had paid her a surprise visit.  The ball had been placed very gently in her court via Bette’s heartfelt apology.  Tina was supposed to be making plans for dinner, yet here she was standing outside the gallery with a brown paper bag of Chinese takeout and an apology of her own.  In the past two days she and Bette managed to trade a few voicemails, but neither had the chance to actually speak to one another.  Tina had been inundated with emergency meetings and conferences and learned just that morning that she would be flying out to LA to meet with a writer the studio was looking to sign.

    Knowing that the gallery’s newest show was opening only a week or so away, Tina was sure Bette would be terribly busy, but she needed to see her before she left.  Tina needed to confirm that what she felt for the gallery owner was real.  Even if they had only met three times, there was an unmistakable connection that the blonde executive couldn’t shake.  The enigmatic beauty provoked in Tina the need to be around her whatever the cost. 

    Tina shifted the take-out bag and pushed her way through the large glass doors.  The gallery was as beautiful and as interesting as its owner.  The current collection was fascinating and as Tina made her way through the large open space, her gaze was drawn to a number of pieces.  Almost forgetting her initial reason for the visit, Tina lost herself in the paintings – until she heard Bette’s commanding voice from another room.  Tina could hear the brunette involved in a notably one-sided conversation. 

    "Can I help you?"

    Tina turned to find a handsome young man who looked to be in his early twenties.

    "Yes.  I’m here to see Bette Porter."

    "Is she expecting you?"

    "Um..No."  Tina smiled apologetically at who she assumed to be Bette’s assistant.

    "Well, Ms. Porter is extremely busy today but I’ll be happy to have a word with her.  Who may I say is calling?"

    "Tina Kennard."

    Tina watched as the young man nodded and walked around the corner.  A moment later, he emerged with the tall brunette close at his heels.  Tina sucked in a breath as she caught sight of a surprised Bette.

Glad that Tina was compelled to see her before leaving for LA and for her to admit it out loud was wonderful for them both. You could tell that Bette was surprised and very pleased.     8. “I’ll miss you,” Bette called out awkwardly as Tina exited out onto the street.”… Loved that line. Typical case where, even after saying goodbye, you feel compelled to say one last thing to a person you care for deeply and that you’re not going to see for a while.
