Subtleties * Chapter 6
"Eric? As in a boyfriend? As in a man?"
"Bette."
"So you’re into men, too?
"Bette."
"I’m fine, Tina. Just a little surprised. So how many women have you been with?"
"Technically…none."
Bette opened her mouth to speak but Tina cut her off,
"Do I need to stick a dumpling in your mouth or will you refrain from saying something stupid?"
Bette shut her mouth abruptly and tried to understand what Tina had said. There had never been any women. None. So it would seem that Bette would be her first, and this did not sit well with the brunette at all. Not in the slightest.
"I just…"
"What? You can be honest with me."
"I just don’t…are you even sure this is even what you want?"
"Bette, this is new, yes. You are the first woman I’ve…Look, I’ve been attracted to women before, I’ve even been hit on before, but I was never compelled enough to do anything about it. Men are easy, you know? And it’s not that I think I’m better than them or that I’m insulting them in any way it’s just that my career has always come first, relationships second. Eric was my first serious relationship but if I were to take a step back – and I have – it’s easy to see why he and I didn’t work. It was the same reason ‘it’ didn’t work in all my past relationships. There was something missing."
"And now?"
"And now? Well, Jesus, since that day I saw you in the book store I haven’t been able to get you out of my head. And when I’m around you I can’t stop looking at you."
"Leering, you mean." Bette smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
"That, too." Tina smiled, then very carefully reached out and clasped Bette’s hand in her own, "You’re not an experiment. Please believe that."
Bette nodded, enjoying the gentle strength of Tina’s hand wrapped around hers. Tina, who had been staring at their hands, looked up at the clock on Bette’s wall and sighed,
"I need to go. I don’t want to but I have to."
"I understand." Bette stood slowly, pulling Tina up with her as she did so. "So what’s your schedule?"
"I’ll fly out tonight, be back in time for Thanksgiving. You have any plans?"
"What? For Thanksgiving? No." Bette shrugged her shoulders.
"Then spend it with me. No reason for us to be alone on the holiday."
"On one condition."
"Anything."
"You’ll come to my opening as my date the following Saturday." Bette walked slightly behind the blond as they made their way to the front of the gallery. It was Bette’s turn to admire the blonde’s figure.
Tina looked back and smiled, "I would love that."
In a stilted moment, both women moved in for a hug that turned into an awkward kiss on the cheek, neither woman knowing the apropos way to bid farewell to someone they hardly knew yet cared for deeply.
"I’ll miss you," Bette called out awkwardly as Tina exited out onto the street.
Tina nodded and waved goodbye, not trusting herself to speak.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Thanks for taking the time to post when you are not feeling well. Loved the update. Glad that Tina was compelled to see her before leaving for LA and for her to admit it out loud was wonderful for them both. You could tell that Bette was surprised and very pleased. Thanks again for posting.

“I’ll miss you,” Bette called out awkwardly as Tina exited out onto the street.”… Loved that line. Typical case where, even after saying goodbye, you feel compelled to say one last thing to a person you care for deeply and that you’re not going to see for a while. Who has never felt that need in such situation? Thanks Scaf, great update. And please have Tina come back soon! Take care, K.
“Do I need to stick a dumpling in your mouth or will you refrain from saying something stupid?” :-) Love the dialogue in your stories.
