    Subtleties * Chapter 6

    Bette’s brow furrowed.

"I’ll only be there a few days but I have to go.  I don’t really have a choice.  In fact, I’m kind of skipping out on a meeting right now by coming here to be with you.  I just didn’t want to leave without seeing you."

    "You didn’t?"

"Actually, I couldn’t.  I needed to see you again."  Tina blushed furiously, "I’m sorry."

"Why on earth are you sorry?"

    "I must sound crazy."

"It’s actually kind of nice to hear that someone felt a need to see me."  It was Bette’s turn to blush, "I haven’t had that in some time."

    "Has it been long?"

Bette nodded.  "I left LA about a year ago.  Bad break-up."

    "Were you together long?"

"About three years.  If I were to be honest with myself, I was probably happy only that first year.  But sometimes you hold onto to something because it’s comfortable rather that because it’s want you want."

    "I can identify."

"Truth is I don’t think I was even all that comfortable."  Bette laughed, "You know I think this is the first time I’ve been able to talk like this without feeling sorry for myself?"

    "Well, that’s good, right?"

"Yeah.  Yeah it is."  Bette paused a moment, "What about you, Tina?"

"Relationship wise, you mean?  Well…my last relationship ended about 6 months ago.  We were together for a few years as well.  Comfortable but nothing special.  At first when I moved to New York we were going to do the long distance thing but it didn’t make much sense.  If I didn’t feel that into it when we were together, how could I feel invested in a relationship living on the other side of the country?"

Bette placed her carton on the glass table in front of the couch and crossed her long legs.  In one fluid motion, she turned her body towards Tina’s; Bette’s left hand lay flat against her thigh, her right arm bent at the elbow as she leaned into the couch, her head resting on her hand.

    "So, you weren’t in love?"

"I’m not sure I’ve ever really been in love to be honest.  Certainly not with Eric."  Tina tried to read Bette’s expression as the brunette’s face twisted in confusion,

    1. Thanx for posting, specially when you are sick. I love this story, and you write those scenes so well I can picture them in my head right away it’s amazing. Get better and PPPS!!!

    2. Hope you are feeling better soon. Thanks for taking the time to post when you are not feeling well. Loved the update. Glad that Tina was compelled to see her before leaving for LA and for her to admit it out loud was wonderful for them both. You could tell that Bette was surprised and very pleased. Thanks again for posting.

    3. “I’ll miss you,” Bette called out awkwardly as Tina exited out onto the street.”… Loved that line. Typical case where, even after saying goodbye, you feel compelled to say one last thing to a person you care for deeply and that you’re not going to see for a while. Who has never felt that need in such situation? Thanks Scaf, great update. And please have Tina come back soon! Take care, K.

    4. Awww…that was really sweet. Great to see Tina reaching out to Bette and giving in to her attraction. Hope you feel better soon. Thanks for being so dedicated to your readers.
