When Peggy got wind of the custody battle and the underhanded tactics that Helena had used to intimate Winnie into submission she was appalled. Had she not been on sabbatical none of this would have happened, but now she was back to make things right.
Helena was nervous that this meeting might have to do with her recent association with Catherine Rothberg. She knew her mother would not approve of the socialite who’d introduced her daughter to illegal gambling. Helena was first attracted by the glamour and what appeared to be a lucrative and entertaining pastime, but soon found herself addicted and frequenting society’s underbelly of illegal gambling rings. She was in a deep hole with some unscrupulous types. In fact, the keys and title to the Lamborghini that she’d driven that day was being used as collateral to cover her bets.
Kit greeted Peggy like family when she showed up at the Planet. They’d known one another for years, and Peggy always stopped by to see Kit whenever she was in Los Angeles. Peggy was an important person in Bette’s professional life, but it was the maternal role that she’d taken on with Bette that Kit really appreciated.
After showing her to a quiet booth in the back, Kit mentioned that her father was there and asked if Peggy would like to meet him. Being as close as they were Bette and Peggy had had numerous conversations about Melvin, so she was curious to meet the man in person.
Melvin recognized the Peabody name as he made it his business to know the who’s who of high society, so he was very familiar with Peggy, her late husband Theodore and the Peabody Foundation legacy. They had a sterling reputation and a passion for philanthropic endeavors focused on the Arts, Culture and Humanities. What he didn’t know until recently was that Peggy Peabody had adopted Bette as a daughter, and that the rivalry between Bette and Helena was born out of jealousy that had given root to Helena’s malevolence.
Unlike his meeting with Allyn Barnes Melvin was a perfect gentleman with Peggy. They got along famously, especially since she had nothing but praise for his talented daughters. Melvin couldn’t take credit for it, but he was proud, nonetheless.
