“I understand that your daughter didn’t get along with my Elizabeth.”

“I think that’s a bit of an understatement Maxine. If you ask Bette she would say that she and Helena are mortal enemies. I had no idea of the damage she’d done to Bette’s career to say nothing of that ‘thing’ between her and Tina. I was naïve enough to think our daughters could be friends not ever realizing the jealousy Helena harbored because of my affection for Bette.”

“Sometimes it’s hard to explain human nature or what some people will do without rhyme or reason.”

“Well I have yet to figure her out, but I don’t suppose it matters much anymore.” Peggy was saddened by the thought of her estranged daughter. Here she’d lost her daughter just when Maxine had found hers.

”How are you adjusting to being back in the United States reunited with your family after all these years? The whole experience had to be overwhelming for you.”

“It has been traumatic but it’s getting better every day as more pieces fall into place.”

“Well if there’s anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to call on me.” Peggy offered.

“Actually there is something Peggy.”

“Of course, what is it?”

“I haven’t had a chance to speak to Elizabeth about it, but I’d really love to get in touch with Allyn Barnes. Elizabeth tells me she’s a friend of yours.”

“Yes. A very old and dear friend. How do you know Allyn?” Peggy asked surprised at what Maxine was asking.

“Didn’t Elizabeth tell you?” Maxine asked assuming Bette had filled Peggy in on their mutual acquaintance.

“No she hasn’t. We haven’t really talked much since she returned from Canada. We’re having lunch next week to catch up and of course we’ll all be together for the Rockefeller Center tree lighting. As a matter of fact Allyn will be coming into the city for that. She’ll be staying with me for a few days after. Perhaps we can arrange for you to come to the house.”

“That would be wonderful Peggy. I’m leaving for Philadelphia the first week of December but I’d love to see her before I go.”

“I’ll arrange it. So tell me how you know Allyn. I don’t think she’s ever spoken of you and certainly she would have said something if she knew you were Bette’s mother?”
