    Thanksgiving – Chapter 52

“She had no idea who I was when we met, as a matter of fact I had no idea who I was until a few weeks ago. Allyn was my benefactor after the accident. I was in a transitional home before the hospital released me on my own. Allyn was a sponsor and a godsend. She not only helped me financially but emotionally as well as supportive. She got me back on my feet so I could take care of Greg. She actually suggested the name I’ve lived under for the past thirty five years. She helped me to establish a new identity and to discover my talents so I could make a living. I owe her so much. I never had a chance to acknowledge it or to thank her.”

“Well she wouldn’t want any praise. She’s a very private person but I’m sure she would love to see you again. I’ll call you next week and send a car for you.”

“Thank you Peggy; and thank you for everything you’ve been to my children and their families. Angelica can’t stop talking about her grandma-Peggy and how much fun she has with her cousins when they visit your home. You’ve been like a second mother to my Elizabeth when I couldn’t be there for her. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to know that she had someone like you to turn to. If I’m any judge of character then I don’t think you’ve failed with your parenting skills where Elizabeth is concerned. She loves you dearly and speaks very highly of you. In just the last few weeks I’ve seen so many examples of your exceptional generosity and kind heart.”

“Thank you Maxine for saying that. Bette has been the daughter I never had. My love for her might have been the detriment of my relationship with my own daughter but I wouldn’t trade having her in my life for the world. I’m happy to have filled some of the void left by you being gone but I promise you I was never enough. She’s needed you more than I think even she realized. She’s been through some very hard times, some thanks to my daughter but she’s come through it all. I’ve never seen her happier and more alive and fulfilled than she is right now.”

They both looked in the direction where Bette and Tina were surrounded by Alice, Shane, and Dana. They were all laughing at something Alice said and Dana was blushing; she was no doubt at the brunt of Alice’s joke. Bette’s arms were placed firmly around Tina’s shoulder as she leaned into her for support. Dana smacked Alice’s arm and that just made them all laugh louder. The two older women smiled at the antics of the younger generation and continued their conversation. They spent most of the rest of the evening together getting to know each other and for Maxine to learn about her own daughter through the eyes of her adopted mother.

This was a wonderful emotional chapter and had me laughing and crying in equal measure as all good stories written by someone with your talent do.

I am totally in love with your version of Bette and her continued relationship with her soulmate, thanks, look forward to the story unwinding further.

Sorry not to have commented on every post recently but be assured that I am still reading and enjoying – even when you leave me hanging over little cliffs now and then !! :-).
