The Balloon Festival
“Nothing’s fair, Tina. You broke everything that meant anything to me. And I don’t think it can be fixed.”
“I won’t accept that.”
“Well, then…I don’t know what you want me to say.”
Tina exhaled.
“I don’t want you to say anything. I’m sorry. For all of it. And if you truly don’t want to communicate with me until I get back home then I will respect your wishes. But I’m not giving up on us.”
This time Bette exhaled.
“Could you please just let me know you made it back safely?”
Bette shook her head yes.
“Thank you. I packed you a couple of pastries and some fruit.”
Bette looked at the bag on the back of the couch.
“Hey…umm…Bette?”
Bette looked at her.
“Julia suggested we try couple’s therapy. Not now. But maybe when you’re ready.”
“We’d have to be a couple to go to couple’s therapy, right?”
Tina fought back the tears. She knew Bette was lashing out because she was hurt.
“Maybe we will be again. One day.”
Bette kicked herself. There was a knock at the door.
“That’s Adam.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
Bette opened the door and was greeted by a smiling AJ.
“He wouldn’t let me leave without him.”
“Hiiiiiiiiii,” AJ sang.
Bette laughed.
“Hiiii. Well, isn’t this a great surprise.”
“Hi, Ms. Teee-naa”
“Hey AJ. Take good care of Bette for me, please.”
“I will.”
“Thank you.”
AJ’s whole face lit up. Bette looked at Tina.
“I’ll text you when I land.”
“Thank you. Have a safe trip.”
Tina watched AJ grab Bette’s hand as they walked to the car. Tina hoped Bette would look back but she did not. Tina closed the door and walked slowly down the hall. She fell on the bed. Her senses were filled with Bette. She could smell her on the sheets. Tina sat up and looked around. She was confused. She grabbed the pillow and Bette’s scent struck her nostrils. Tina inhaled. Tears gradually fell down her cheeks. Tina picked up the photo and was surprised by the note in Bette’s handwriting.
I was so blinded by anger, I didn’t even notice this was gone. Do you think it’s possible to find these people again? I miss them. Check the laundry bag. ~She signed it with a heart and a smiley face.
Tina frantically looked around until she saw the laundry bag in the corner. Tina pulled out the Yale sweatshirt. She brought it to her nose and started crying.
“Oh Bette.”
Tina shrugged on the sweatshirt covered in Bette’s scent, crawled into the bed covered in Bette’s scent and balled up into the fetal position. She read the note again and ran her fingers over Bette’s face.
“It’s possible, Baby. I will help you find your way back to me.”
Tina fell asleep as Bette’s scent comforted her.

Wow wow wow!!!! What a chapter!!!!
It started out so positive and gave me hope, hope that thanks to this day they were one step closer to rebuilding their relationship but by the end of the chapter I was in tears and I could literally feel the pain of Bette in particular. She was harsh in her words but it was really what Tina needed to hear, the hard cold truth what her behavior and leaving Bette did. Bette’s words that Tina loves her but doesn’t feel that, ouch!!!
Tina seemed to understand what her leaving Bette had done before this talk but she didn’t seem to feel the real impact, what it did to Bette emotionally.
How can you tell someone that you are leaving her because they loved you too much. I sincerely hope that Tina finally understands that saying sorry and I love you is not enough but that she needs to show it in action.
And I fell in love with AJ, what an incredibly cute and sweet kid, love at first sight between him and Bette. Tina is only now realizing how good a mother Bette can be, although she already knew that from the flashback she had earlier. But that she didn’t see herself that Bette also had a lot of grief and pain after the miscarriage and only realized that after Kit and Alice told her, I can somewhat understand because she had the miscarriage but it was also Bette’s baby, it feels a bit double, I think Tina, as she says herself, is a spoiled brat that took Bette for granted, at a certain point she didn’t even see the small things that Bette did for her and their relationship.
I notice that I find it difficult to like this Tina. She’s trying really hard and I hope she really knows how to win Bette back, but you can try too hard. She has to give Bette time and space and stay in therapy because she really has to learn that not everything goes the way she wants.
I am a Tibetter at heart, so I fervently hope that they will find their way back to each other.
I am a big fan of this story, hope to read another chapter soon!!!
Thank you so much. I’m glad you’re a big fan. It’s been fun to write and to really explore both of their points of view. Don’t give up on Tina just yet. I think she may surprise you in the coming chapters.
Yes, it did start out positive. But relationships are messy. Especially when you have a love like Bette and Tina. It gets a little messy. And they are in the crux of the mess.
Isn’t AJ the best. So sweet. I love the relationship between Bette and AJ. So important to see Bette so gentle and loving.
They are going to have to talk about Bette’s grief before they can move forward. And that’s gonna be a doozy!
Thanks for reading!
Damn, Im crying now. Okay, damn you Tina, you broke your forever love. You better buy a gallon of superglue and get to sticking! What a great chapter! I can’t read it again tonight. PPS
