    The College Festival

Tina laughs, the kind of laugh that draws people in. She steps closer, inspecting Bette’s brushstroke.

Tina: So, what brings you here, Bette Porter? You don’t exactly scream ‘arts festival regular.

Bette sets the brush down carefully, as if distancing herself from the messy creativity.

Bette: I’m a law student. Third year. I was just passing through, trying to clear my head.

Tina: (raising an eyebrow) Law? Figures. You’ve got that ‘I mean business’ look.

Bette: (smirking) Is that a compliment or an insult?

Tina: (playfully) Depends. Do you actually like what you do, or are you just good at it?

Bette is momentarily taken aback by the question. She looks at Tina, who’s wiping her hands on a rag, waiting for an answer without judgment.

Bette: (after a pause) I guess I like the challenge. The structure. I’ve always been… focused on getting somewhere.

Tina: (nodding thoughtfully) Focused is good. But don’t forget to enjoy the view along the way.

    Bette chuckles, clearly intrigued.

Bette: And what about you? Are you always this philosophical when you’re painting murals?

Tina: Only when someone asks. (shrugs) I’m an art major. Painting is my thing. It’s messy and unpredictable, and I guess that’s what I like about it. Opposite of law school, huh?

Bette: (with a small smile) Very opposite.

Tina turns back to her mural, and for a moment, they stand in companionable silence. Bette watches her, drawn to her ease and creativity.

Bette: So, Tina Kennard, when you’re not creating masterpieces, what do you do for fun?

Tina: (grinning) This. Painting. Sketching. Sometimes I surf when I can borrow a board. What about you? Or is ‘fun’ not in a law student’s vocabulary

Bette: (leaning against a nearby post, smirking) Touché.

Bette, emboldened by Tina’s energy, takes a step closer, her usual cool exterior softening.

Bette: Then how about we continue this conversation over coffee? I’d like to know more about what makes someone paint like this. (gestures to the mural)

Tina pauses, caught off guard but intrigued.

Tina: Coffee, huh? You don’t strike me as the spontaneous type.

Bette: Maybe I’m full of surprises.

Tina studies her for a moment, then smiles.

Tina: Alright, Bette Porter. Let’s see if a law student can keep up with an artist. But you’re buying.
