    The College Festival

Bette: (chuckling) That’s a very specific prediction.

Tina: (smiling) She wasn’t entirely wrong. I’ve always loved being outside, doing my own thing. But I’ve got to admit, I’m a little jealous of your… confidence. You seem like you’ve always known exactly where you’re headed.

Bette: (thoughtful) Maybe. But there’s something nice about not knowing. You seem like someone who enjoys the ride, no matter where it takes you.

Tina: (grinning) Most of the time. Unless I’m lost in the middle of nowhere without cell service.

Bette: See, that’s where being competitive comes in handy. I’d probably turn it into a gamewho can find their way out first.

Tina: (laughing) And you’d definitely win.

Bette: (leaning forward, her voice softer) Not necessarily. I think you might surprise me.

The conversation flows effortlessly, both women learning more about each other. The contrast between their upbringings Bette’s driven, structured city life and Tina’s playful, nature-filled childhood creates a sense of fascination and connection. Tina gestures animatedly as she tells a story about climbing a tree to save a kitten, while Bette listens, her expression softening as she lets her guard down.

Tina: (after finishing her story) Okay, your turn. Tell me something about Philly life. Did you have any wild adventures, or were you too busy being a kickball mogul?

Bette: (smirking) Well, I wasn’t always this put together. My sisters and I once snuck into an old theater to watch a banned movie. Got caught, of course, and had to spend the whole summer mowing lawns to pay for the damage.

Tina: (laughing) Wait, you? Breaking the rules? I’m impressed.

Bette: (leaning back, her smile widening) Like I said, I’m full of surprises.

Their coffees sit mostly untouched, a testament to how absorbed they’ve been in each other’s company. Bette glances at her watch reluctantly, realizing how much time has passed.

Bette: (smiling) I should probably get back to my mountain of reading, but this was nice. Unexpected, but nice.

Tina: (grinning) I’ll take that as a compliment. You’re not so bad yourself, Philly.

Bette: (smirking) Careful, North Carolina. I might start liking you.

They share a lingering look, a subtle but undeniable spark passing between them. Bette reaches for her bag, hesitating for a moment before speaking.

Bette: Same time tomorrow? I mean, if you’re not too busy climbing trees or painting squirrels.

Tina: (laughing) We’ll see, Philly. We’ll see.

As Bette gets ready to leave, she pulls her phone out of her bag, hesitating for just a moment before handing it to Tina.

Bette: (smirking) I’m not great at leaving things to chance. Put your number in please.

Tina chuckles, taking the phone and typing her number in before handing it back.

Tina: I figured you’d want to control the follow-up. There you go.

Bette: You’re not wrong. And you’d better answer when I call.

Tina: (grinning) Guess you’ll have to find out.

They share another lingering look before Bette walks out of the coffee shop, a small smile playing on her lips, while Tina watches her go, clearly intrigued.

Tina stays behind, sipping her coffee, a faint smile on her face as she watches Bette through the window.
