    The Island – Chapter 18

“Too late for that!” Tina looks directly at Kelly with fire in her eyes.

Bette shakes her head again while opening the front door. She tries to speak but instead gives Tina a worried look. Tina glares back.

“Is she the new damsel in distress? Are you in love with her now?”

Bette doesn’t answer. She is hurt and confused. She walks out with a heavy heart.

It’s after two in the morning when Bette returns. Her eyes break out in tears when she sees Tina sleeping on the couch, fully dressed, an empty bottle of champagne lies on its side next to her. Bette frowns. She can feel her heartstrings pull. She lifts Tina into her arms and carries her upstairs, laying her gently on the bed. She slowly and lovingly undresses her, leaving her in her panties. She undresses herself and snuggles behind her.

“I love you so much, princess but what the hell am I going to do with you?” Bette whispers and kisses her on the shoulder. She pushes her face into her golden hair and inhales her sweet scent. Tina wakes, feeling Bette beside her. She whips her body around and holds on to Bette for dear life.

“Bette. I’m so sorry. I love you so much. I can’t lose you.”

“Tina. Go back to sleep. We’ll talk tomorrow.” Bette’s voice is weak. She is emotionally and physically exhausted. Her heart is breaking.

“Baby, please don’t leave me. I swear! I’ll do anything.” Tina is crying. Bette pulls her in tightly.

    “I won’t leave you.”

Tina goes quiet as her sobbing subsides. She blinks the tears away and kisses Bette’s chest. Her head is cloudy and her heart is racing.

“Where did you go?” She asks softly after several minutes, shutting her eyes tightly, expecting the worse. Bette sighs, realizing it’s going to take a lot for Tina to trust her completely.

“Kelly thinks her husband is cheating on her. They had a fight last night and she walked out. She spent the night in her car. She left her purse in her house and she has nowhere to go. She’s pregnant Tina, and she’s lost and she’s scared. I drove her to her parent’s house in San Diego.”

“Oh.” Tina feels horrible. She’s utterly ashamed of herself. She squeezes her eyes to stop the tears.

“Go to sleep.” Bette can’t continue. She feels just as lost as Tina. She kisses her on the forehead before closing her eyes as restless sleep takes over quickly.
