The Real Tibette – Christmas 2023

Oh, thought Bette. Well, I guess this one’s on us . . .

    ***

Much later, Bette found herself alone in the kitchen. Kit and Sonny were upstairs. Ben and Sasha were in bed. Helena and Stephanie went next door, with Peggy staying for Christmas. Tina and Angie were out with Solly, taking him for a last pee.

She opened the fridge and scanned the few platters of leftover food, but she wasn’t really hungry, just unsettled. And then suddenly she was speared with a pang of nostalgia so sharp it made her immediately tear up.

The fridge. Opening it like this, to choose what to leave out for Santa Claus and his reindeer. Would they do that tomorrow? Could they, ever again? Maybe one day. Maybe with grandchildren. Again, the tears came. The longing for more never stopped, did it? More of this family, this life they loved and worked so hard at.

A sound of claws on wood and Solly appeared, followed by a blast of chill air from the front door closing, and the sound of Angie and Tina’s voices in the hallway.

‘Frosty!’ Tina smiled, as she came into the kitchen, unwinding her scarf and draping it on the back of a dining chair.

‘Hey, Mom,’ said Angie to Bette from the doorway, ‘I’m whacked. I’ll see you tomorrow.’

‘G’night, honey, I love you,’ said Bette.

    ‘Love you too.’

She disappeared again, and Tina went to put the kettle on when her phone got a text.

‘You want me to look at that?’ Bette asked.

‘Sure,’ said Tina – then she realised and said, ‘Actually, no! No, just leave it.’

Bette paused with her hand almost on the phone. They looked at one another. Then Bette moved away from the phone and went to get a couple of mugs from the cupboard. The silence would have been uncomfortable but for the radio playing softly in the background.

    ‘Camomile?’ Tina asked.

    ‘Mhmm.’

They fixed the tea, moving around one another in a well-oiled ballet. When they had their cups, Tina suggested they go in the living room. Bette agreed, and  even as she preceded Tina she was aware that her wife was checking her phone.

In the living room, they sat on the sofa that had the best view of the tree. The room, large and beautifully proportioned, was always especially stunning at Christmas time. The gorgeous melody of ‘O Holy Night’ and the slightly sharp scent of the pine drifted in the air. Solly jumped up on the sofa next to Tina and laid his head on her lap.

‘All three at home,’ she said, stroking her little prince’s head.

Bette looked at her, so content, so peaceful, and her breath caught in her chest.

‘You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life,’ she said softly. Tina looked up and smiled. Her high cheekbones utterly sublime in the warm glow from the tree. ‘And yes,’ Bette said, lifting Tina’s other hand to her lips, ‘all three at home.’ She kissed her fingers. ‘Perfect.’

Bette laid her wife’s hand down again, and they snuggled closer, both just gazing at the tree, half-closing their eyes and making the lights haze.

‘So, did Jo say yes?’ Bette asked eventually.

Tina’s body stiffened. ‘How do you know about that?’

Bette exhaled, and drew back to look at her wife. ‘Okay,’ she began, ‘the first thing I need you to know is that the dog is completely fine.’

    ‘WHAT?’

    ***

And, dear reader, the dog was fine. And the sweethearted Jo said yes to the proposal of marriage from the gallant Shane McCutcheon. And the girl Sasha gained a little maturity – and a story she would tell her own children. Because, yes, of course there are grandchildren for Bette and Tina. But all in good time. And meanwhile, Happy Christmas!

Happy holidays to you also from across the big blue pond!

Interesting party with lots of extraordinary guests. Shame Bette couldn’t get to meet AB – but maybe will anyway.

Wow, Shane popping the BIG question. Hope this time its forever & they’ll both be happy together.

Gotta say that Sol might want to rethink about hanging around Sasha in the future – that girl is dangerous to be around!!

Thanks for another great glimpse into the wonderful life of Bette & Tina & their awesome family.

Thinking though that there should be a quick follow-up chapter about their Christmas Day though!! Ha!!

      Thanks for the treat.

      • Hi pal! YOu’ve just reminded me that I owe you an email! Oops. Really dropped the ball – sorry.

Thanks for reading this. And yes, I am moulding Sasha into being Trouble with a capital T. No fun if it’s all too easy, is there?? ;-)

    3. Sasha, Sasha, Sasha! Of course she will be the one telling tales of Mama T and Mama B to her children. What a pleasant surprise this Christmas night to find your story. And then to have Shane pop the question! Thank you for keeping the spirt of Tibette alive. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the readers of this site. Donate please!

      • Hi majic! Hope you’re well! Thanks so much for reading this story and for commenting. It means a lot to me. :-)

Y’know, it’s a real dilemma, writing this story, whether to skip ahead in time or not. In some ways, I’d really like to. I’me very drawn to the idea of writing B&T’s life with adult kids and grandkids etc. But then you end up skirting around the ‘d’ word and I don’t ever want to write that.

Agree about supporting this site! Hope you had a good time over the holidays!
