The Real Tibette – Christmas 2023

‘She’s attached to a movie we’re thinking of co-producing with the BBC about Barbara Hepworth,’ she said. ‘And she mentioned she’d read your book, so . . .’

Bette’s face was a picture. Equal parts ecstasy and terror.

    ‘Y’okay?’ Tina asked.

‘Mhmm,’ said Bette, her dark eyes brimming with excitement.

Tina smirked. ‘Got a l’il crush there?’

    ‘No!’

But Bette was blushing. And they both laughed, sensing they were about to embark on a very memorable afternoon.

    ***

Guests began to arrive around two o’clock. Tina didn’t want an actual line-up to greet them, but she did ask the kids to stay in the hallway for a little while so she could introduce them.

    ‘What for?’ asked Sasha.

‘Because I’m proud of you,’ said Tina, smoothing her daughter’s hair.

Sasha opened her mouth to take issue – she was ten, and it was the law – but then her eyes lit up and she beamed at her mother. Clearly hadn’t been expecting that. So she and Ben and Angie stayed and smiled and shook hands with the dozens of very well-groomed people who streamed into their home. Tina had invited a well-known YouTuber that she knew Sasha liked. And a baseball player for Ben, and Zadie Smith and Fran Leibowitz for Angie. Fran’s plus-one was Martin Scorsese, which rendered Alice speechless. ‘If only we’d known, we could’ve had him on retainer all these years,’ Bette murmured to Shane as they marvelled at their friend’s utter inability to formulate a sentence when introduced to the diminutive movie legend.

By half past two, most of the guests were there, including Helena and Stephanie, Peggy, Shane’s girlfriend Jo, and of course Alice’s husband Jed and Jed’s son, Herbie.

‘Hey,’ he said to Sasha, who was sitting on the stairs with Solly.

    ‘Hey,’ Sasha replied.

    ‘What are you doing?’

    ‘Waiting for Miranda.’

    ‘Who’s Miranda?’

Sasha went bug-eyed. ‘Seriously? Miranda Sings? From YouTube?’ Herbie looked blank. ‘You don’t watch her? What do you even do?’

Herbie blinked. He was a little younger than Sasha, not yet nine, with a mop of dark-brown curls and fiercely intelligent light-blue eyes.

    ‘Wanna play Minecraft?’ he asked.

‘Noooow-uhh!’ declared Sasha, in the elongated, bi-syllabic way that she’d picked up from Alice.

Herbie thought for a moment, then sat on the stairs next to Sasha, forcing Solly onto the next stair down. The little spaniel didn’t bear a grudge, though, and licked Herbie’s hand.

Happy holidays to you also from across the big blue pond!

Interesting party with lots of extraordinary guests. Shame Bette couldn’t get to meet AB – but maybe will anyway.

Wow, Shane popping the BIG question. Hope this time its forever & they’ll both be happy together.

Gotta say that Sol might want to rethink about hanging around Sasha in the future – that girl is dangerous to be around!!

Thanks for another great glimpse into the wonderful life of Bette & Tina & their awesome family.

Thinking though that there should be a quick follow-up chapter about their Christmas Day though!! Ha!!

      Thanks for the treat.

      • Hi pal! YOu’ve just reminded me that I owe you an email! Oops. Really dropped the ball – sorry.

Thanks for reading this. And yes, I am moulding Sasha into being Trouble with a capital T. No fun if it’s all too easy, is there?? ;-)

I hope you’re well and that you’ve had a good time over the holidays.

    3. Sasha, Sasha, Sasha! Of course she will be the one telling tales of Mama T and Mama B to her children. What a pleasant surprise this Christmas night to find your story. And then to have Shane pop the question! Thank you for keeping the spirt of Tibette alive. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the readers of this site. Donate please!

      • Hi majic! Hope you’re well! Thanks so much for reading this story and for commenting. It means a lot to me. :-)

Y’know, it’s a real dilemma, writing this story, whether to skip ahead in time or not. In some ways, I’d really like to. I’me very drawn to the idea of writing B&T’s life with adult kids and grandkids etc. But then you end up skirting around the ‘d’ word and I don’t ever want to write that.

Agree about supporting this site! Hope you had a good time over the holidays!
