The Real Tibette – Christmas 2023

    ***

In the living room, Bette was flitting around, straightening a picture here, repositioning a poinsettia there, smiling and exchanging pleasantries, but really her mind was on one thing and one thing alone: when was Annette Bening getting here?

    ‘Hey.’

She turned round and saw Shane. One hand in her jeans pocket, the other holding a negroni with a flashing Christmas tree twizzle stick in it.

    ‘Hi!’ Bette beamed. ‘Having fun?’

    ‘Yep. I mean, y’know . . .’

Bette smiled. It was noticeable these days that even Shane was beginning to join the ranks of the ex party animals.

    ‘Where’s Jo?’

Shane indicated a sofa behind Bette. ‘Talking to Pink and Kate.’

Bette looked round and saw a woman with short grey hair, and another with mid-length blonde hair, all engaged in a loud, laughing conversation with Jo.

‘Half these people are lost on me,’ she said quietly. ‘I was introduced to them when they arrived and I’ve forgotten already what they do.’

    ‘Pink’s a pop star and Kate’s a comedian.’

    ‘Right,’ Bette nodded.

Shane took a sip of her drink, her eyes never leaving Jo. Bette sensed something was up, but couldn’t put her finger on it, and then it didn’t matter because Alice came over and grabbed them both by the elbow.

‘This is not a drill. Martin Scorsese just told me I could send him the script for my biopic of Gloria Steinem,’ she said in an urgent, trembling whisper.

    ‘Oh wow—’ Shane began.

‘No, wait, shut up, just . . .’ Alice closed her eyes. ‘I can’t breathe . . . I just . . . I have no fucking clue why he said it. Is he being polite? Why does he wanna see it? What does it mean?’

Bette knit her brow. ‘Why not ask him?’

Alice’s eyes flew open. ‘Ask him? I can’t ask him! I can’t even talk to him! Ever again! I had one good conversation, I can’t risk undoing that!’

‘Well, then we can’t help you.’

Alice stared at Bette, then Shane, then Bette. ‘I’ll ask Tina.’

She disappeared again. Bette rolled her eyes. Shane just laughed.

‘In my mom’s, they’re in the trunk at the bottom of their bed. In my dad’s, they’re in the closet next to the bathroom, under the towels. In my granma’s house, they’re in the attic or sometimes the garage.’

Happy holidays to you also from across the big blue pond!

Interesting party with lots of extraordinary guests. Shame Bette couldn’t get to meet AB – but maybe will anyway.

Wow, Shane popping the BIG question. Hope this time its forever & they’ll both be happy together.

Gotta say that Sol might want to rethink about hanging around Sasha in the future – that girl is dangerous to be around!!

Thanks for another great glimpse into the wonderful life of Bette & Tina & their awesome family.

Thinking though that there should be a quick follow-up chapter about their Christmas Day though!! Ha!!

      Thanks for the treat.

      • Hi pal! YOu’ve just reminded me that I owe you an email! Oops. Really dropped the ball – sorry.

Thanks for reading this. And yes, I am moulding Sasha into being Trouble with a capital T. No fun if it’s all too easy, is there?? ;-)

I hope you’re well and that you’ve had a good time over the holidays.

    3. Sasha, Sasha, Sasha! Of course she will be the one telling tales of Mama T and Mama B to her children. What a pleasant surprise this Christmas night to find your story. And then to have Shane pop the question! Thank you for keeping the spirt of Tibette alive. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the readers of this site. Donate please!

      • Hi majic! Hope you’re well! Thanks so much for reading this story and for commenting. It means a lot to me. :-)

Y’know, it’s a real dilemma, writing this story, whether to skip ahead in time or not. In some ways, I’d really like to. I’me very drawn to the idea of writing B&T’s life with adult kids and grandkids etc. But then you end up skirting around the ‘d’ word and I don’t ever want to write that.

Agree about supporting this site! Hope you had a good time over the holidays!
