    The Roommates – 2nd Dimension: Chapter 27

There was something else shed always wanted to know about her girlfriend. Why did everyone start calling her Bette instead of Liz or Lizzie or something like that?

Deborah smiled broadly, Well dear, that was all me. Jan always liked the name Elizabeth, but there was a woman I used to work with that was absolutely deplorable named Elizabeth. We called her Liz. I detested Liz and couldnt see calling my grandchild by the same name. I finally decided that I preferred to say Bette. It just kinda stuck.

Im glad it did. I hate Elizabeth. Im only Elizabeth when Im getting in trouble., said Bette.

The phone rang and Karen sprung up and disappeared into the kitchen to answer it. She returned moments later with the cordless phone and handed it to her mother. Its Melvin, she whispered.

Deborah nodded and answered, Hello Melvin.Im doing alrightWhat time do they open tomorrow?…….Okay..Lets shoot for 9 tomorrow then..Which papers?….Let me try and find them..Mmmhmmm.Bob had them all together. Deborah got up and started moving to the stairs towards her 2nd floor master bedroom in search of the paper work shed need to show the funeral home tomorrow. As her voice drifted away and became less and less audible, Tina studied the photos in her hand and Bette took a sip of her cocoa before walking around and plopping down on the couch beside Karen. It was killing her not to know the story behind her aunts HRC bumper sticker and the seemingly psychic way in which see appeared to understand Bettes need for Tina. With her grandmother out of the room, the dark-haired young woman saw this as her chance to get her questions answered.

She smiled sweetly at the woman beside her and said, So.Aunt Karen..whats new with you? On hearing this, Tina looked up from the photos, her eyes ping-ponging back and forth between Karen and Bette.

Karen smiled curiously at her niece and replied, Ummmm, nothing much. How about you?

Nothing much is really new. Seems youve already been clued in to most things. Daddy told you about Damon.

Youve met Tina. I have some other really good friends at school.Dana and Alice., she said.
