The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 11

Dark brown eyes stared back at her. “Should I not?”

    “I don’t want you to.”

“Are you dating, Tina?” asked Bette.

    “No, Love. I’m not.”

“Don’t. Please. At least not while you’re away, okay? Can we talk when you get back? About us? About where this is going?” she asked.

    Tina smiled. “Of course.”

The conversation was getting heavy. Bette changed the subject. “You’re going to get there pretty late, huh?”

Tina nodded. “I am. But I’ll still call you.”

“No, T. Don’t call me. Text me. And text me your address. Just get where you’re going. Get there safely. Where are you staying?” she asked.

“I have a place in Manhattan.”

    Bette looked surprised. “You do?”

“I do. I want to bring you there sometime. I love New York.”

Bette smiled. “I’d like that. I love it too.”

    “How is work?”

“It’s good. I was ill last week. It feels good to be back in the office,” Bette replied.

Tina frowned. “You didn’t tell me that.”

Bette looked away. “No, I didn’t.”

    “Why?”

The truth was that Bette didn’t want to disclose the reasons she’d been ill. She didn’t want to talk about her fears of psychosis and withdrawal from drugs and alcohol. It was embarrassing for her.

“I don’t want to talk about it, T. Not now. But I’ll tell you. Nothing serious.”

    “Are you sure?”

    “100%”

Tina watched Bette, judging her disposition through the screen. “You wouldn’t lie to me?”

    “Never.”

They spoke for a little longer before Bette smiled slyly and said, “Tina?” said Bette.

    “Yes, Babe?”

    “You look beautiful.”

Tina blushed. “I look a mess. I’ve been rushing around.”

    “Tina?”

    “Yes, Bette.”

Bette looked into Tina’s eyes, holding her gaze. “You look beautiful.”

Tina closed her eyes again. “Bette, please.”

    “What?”

    “You make my heart flutter.”

    Bette smiled. “Good.”

They talked until Tina was seated comfortably in her first-class seat and the flight attendant announced the cabin door was closing and that the passengers should switch their phones to wifi-only mode. Bette didn’t leave the office until after 7, but she felt accomplished when she did leave. That evening she called her sister, Kit, and they made a plan for Bette to visit her on the weekend.

Dana stopped by, giving her a memory link to all of her memories of Kit. She now knew that Kit’s first pregnancy had ended tragically; the baby had not survived. The loss of her pregnancy had driven Kit into a deep depression and into a deluge of drugs and alcohol. Melvin had disowned her. Kit’s mother had called Bette and the younger sister had even returned home to San Diego to visit with her. Their visit ended horribly. Kit lashed out at her, throwing their father’s love for Bette in her face, pushing her away. Bette had been wounded when she left. It wasn’t until one of Kit’s friend’s overdosed and died that she began to recover. She finally broke down and called her mother who’d checked her into rehab. Kit had diligently worked the 12 steps, even making meaningful amends to her baby sister. Bette had hugged her tightly and they had cried together. It was the closest moment they had ever shared.

Kit had thrown herself into her work, focusing on her music. She’d re-entered the entertainment world, starting out on background vocals on live gigs and recordings. She sang mostly R&B and some gospel. Singing made her feel alive. It filled her with joy. She had slowly transitioned into sound engineering as well. The breadth of her experiences and connections grew and five years after her relapse and stint in rehab, she’d been ready to start her own family.

But she didn’t trust any man enough to marry him, let alone carry his baby.

She’d settled on an anonymous donor and had a son that she’d named Dylan Aaron Porter. Though her father wasn’t in her life, Bette had been a wonderful aunt to her baby boy. And her mother had been her rock and support system. The world of Kit’s friends had grown and she built a community for Dylan.

Bette could see their shared past and feel the power of her relationship with her only sibling. She was happy that she’d finally called her sister and she looked forward to seeing her.

    1. Thanks for this early Christmas gift :-)
Interesting background story to Kit’s past. I’m curious about Bette’s meeting with her sister. Will she tell Kit about Tina?

Tina flowers and gift are very thoughtful. I wonder whether Sidney saw the flowers and card in the breakroom before she left. Time to finalize their separation. I have a bad feeling about Sidney still having a key to Bette’s house.

T + B have a lot to talk about when Tina gets back from NYC. Being exclusive with Bette is great but when will she come clean about Henry? Your AN “life rarely follows the plans…” leaves me a little worried.

Anyway, I wish you a merry Christmas, enjoy the season!

Looking forward to your next posting

      cheers

    2. Feeling like kiwipit. Seems like our girls gonna be shocked, disappointed and full of questions by the time they finally talk about their SPOUSES!!!

Bette seems to be agonizing about the fragility of relationship with Sid,but Tina doesn’t seem to give a hoot about ‘ol Henry! Hmmmmm did I miss a chapter about what’s been going on with them?

    3. I like this story, but I concerned about the future of these two because of Tina’s behavior. She acts then thinks about what she is doing. This is not the same character that we saw in 2005 who almost always over thought every situation. She’s definitely into doing what is easiest at the moment – go to church with the parents to keep the arguments down, have Henry escort her to all parental events to have the right appearance for the parents and friends. However, we really do not know what her relationship is with Henry. Is he just her handy dandy escort or is he or has he been romantically involved with Tina? Tina appears to be sexually experienced with women. Is it possible that Tina is a closeted player with Henry as her cover? Bette’s story is that she has been faithfully married to Sidney but Sidney’s cheating is what broke them up. Of course Bette’s relationship with Sidney did not seam like a very happy one which is why perhaps the cheating occurred.

I believe Sidney is still in love with Bette but exhibits signs of being mentally abused by her. Alice,James and even Sidney have commented on the softening of Bette’s temperament.

This is an extremely interesting story…I am soo hooked on it. Can’t wait to find out more about these 2019 characters.

      Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays.

    4. Martha3128 has expressed my concerns about Tina2019! She has definitely been the aggressor! And has done it inspite of being married…to Henry.

Just like Tina2005, the fear of dealing honestly with her parents has stunted her ability to grow with Bette!
