The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 45
Tina stood on the sidewalk watching for the blue coupe until Alice came and retrieved her. Alice helped her into bed, she and Tasha sitting on either side of her.
“I thought I was doing the right thing,” she said quietly. “She doesn’t understand how much I love her.”
Alice sighed. She was shoulder to shoulder with Tina, letting her best friend’s girl rest against her. “She knows you love her. But Bette hates lying and she doesn’t like to share. This shit with Sidney. Everything is still fresh for her. She’ll come around.”
Tasha asked, “You really think so?”
She and Alice shared a gaze. “I hope so,” Alice replied quietly.
“I get it. I understand how she feels. She’s upset,” said Tasha.
Tina looked at Tasha. “How would you feel?”
Tasha thought about it and tried to put herself in Bette’s shoes. “I would probably feel the same way as Bette. I’m sorry, Tina.”
Tina nodded. “I fucked up. Goddamn it!”
“Tina, I’ve known Bette a really long time. I have never seen her like she is with you. She throws all caution to the wind. She loves you in a way that is blind and all-consuming. I don’t think she can stay angry at you. She’ll calm down. Just give her time.”
Tina’s eyes filled with tears. “I just…I just want to be with her. And I don’t want to fuck up her sobriety.”
Alice closed her eyes, as if remembering her friend’s recent struggles. “Shit. I’ll be back,” she said.
“Where are you going?” asked Tasha.
“Make a phone call,” said Alice.
She went out to the living room and called her best friend.
“What do you want?” Bette answered.
“Where are you?”
“Oh, I’m out,” Bette replied.
“I know that. Where are you? I’ll come get you. Please don’t mess up your sobriety.”
Bette was quiet, stewing in anger. “Is she still there?”
“Yes. She is crazy about you. She’s not going anywhere, Bette. I don’t know if I agree with what she did, but I understand. She’s been doing everything to keep you guys together.”
