The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 47
They were still lying together on the couch, Tina resting atop Bette, her head on her lover’s chest. Bette kissed her forehead and snuggled her tighter.
“Baby?” she asked.
“Mmm hmm?” Tina replied.
Her hazel eyes were watching the decorated Christmas tree, content to gaze at the lights, absorbing the quiet between them.
“What’s the rest of the plan? Why exactly do you need to catch them by surprise?”
Tina’s voice was calm and soothing when she answered. “I have been working with my attorney and a private investigator to figure out some type of leverage against my father and Henry. I didn’t want that leverage to seem like retaliation for Henry invoking the pre-nup. I’ve been waiting to get the leverage in place before I drop my new divorce paperwork on Henry.”
Bette frowned, confused. “But you already moved the money. Why did you need the leverage?”
“As my attorney advised, just because I moved the money, doesn’t mean a judge wouldn’t rule against me. A judge could still find in favor of the pre-nup and order me to present the assets or face prosecution. I needed something to stop the pre-nup from being enforced.”
Bette asked, “Did you find something? Some leverage?”
Tina leaned up and looked down into her lover’s attentive gaze. “I did. Henry fucked an underaged girl. She was a high-school intern, only 16 years old. He got her pregnant. She kept the baby.”
The round, brown pools grew wide, studying the woman above her; hunting for signs that this information had crushed or wounded her in some way that might need comfort or compassion. There was no sadness in the hazel eyes. Just a hint of victory, laced with disgust.
“T, that’s statutory – – -,” Bette began.
“Rape. Yes. Statutory rape. It happened 6 months after he and I were married.”
“Are you okay?” asked Bette.
Tina nodded and lay back down. “I’m fine. I was surprised when I first found out. But now, I’m just pretty numb about everything.
“Numb isn’t always good, T,” said Bette, stroking Tina along her hairline.
