The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 52

He winked at his sister. She and Kit smiled, thankful for the distraction. Dylan raced over to the table, where Alice and Tasha were waiting to play the game.

    “Everything okay?” asked Jack.

“The gallery was burglarized. I have to go down there. We should be back soon. The police just called,” Sidney answered.

“Oh shit. Be careful, okay?” he said.

Sidney nodded and slipped on her jacked. “We will. Be right back.”

She grabbed Bette’s keys and then she and Kit headed for the blue coupe. Sidney’s adrenaline was pumping. She hoped the damage wasn’t too extensive. It felt good to be the one handing things for a change. As they walked down the porch, she stared at Tina’s Lexus SUV parked in front of the house.

Kit placed a hand on her arm. “She’s really a nice person, Sid.”

Sidney sighed. “I’m sure she is. I just…I miss her.”

They got into the car and Sidney carefully backed out of the driveway.

Kit replied, “I know it must be difficult.”

Sidney’s eyes watered, but she focused on the road. “It is. But I have no one to blame but myself. I’m so glad I have time left in rehab to work on my shit. It’ll be nice to get a change of pace and go back to Sacramento. Being without Bette brings on sadness.”

“I’ve been there. I know how hard it is,” said Kit.

Sidney nodded. “Is it okay if I call you sometime? Once I leave?”

    “You can. We’re family, still.”

Sidney smiled. “You seemed pretty pissed at me.”

“Hell, I was. You cheated on my baby sister. I was thinking of pulling out a shotgun and a shovel to just dispose of you,” Kit replied.

    Sidney nodded. “I deserve that.”

Kit’s voice was soft. “But she loved you. She didn’t want to let you go. I think…I think she was afraid of the change. And she couldn’t cope without being on something.”

“I hate that. Is she doing okay? Like really, okay?”

Kit nodded. “She is doing well. She still has the drive, you know? When she gets stressed, that’s where she turns. That’s the part she needs to work on. But I think she’ll be just fine.”

“And Tina? Is she good for her?”

Kit smiled. “She is, Sid. I promise to look out for her. I always have and I always will.”

The pulled up behind a city bus at a red light.

Sidney sat back and looked at Kit. “Thank you for coming with me. And for your kindness to me.”

“Girl, I still love you. You’ve been my sister for 15 years. That’s a long time, Sid.”

The blonde smiled shyly. “It is. Thank you all the same.”

The bus moved forward and Sidney turned her gaze back to the road.

“What was the hardest part of recovery for you?” she asked Kit.

But Kit didn’t have a chance to respond.

A semi-trunk came flying through the intersection at full speed and T-boned the small, blue coupe. It tumbled and rolled and rolled and tumbled before it landed on its hood some 300 feet away. The semi slowed to a stop, turned and then drove away.

    1. Is this dad’s doing? Kit and Sidney being mistaken by his thugs for Bette and Tina? Tina’s car in the front of Bette’s house made them think she’s at Bette’s?

Drama! Things are coming thick and fast. And I have to go to work and can’t read more. This is going to be a long day.

Thanks for your multi-chapter posting, MTS. Gonna finish reading tonight.
