The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice

“What….what do you think?” asked Janice.

Bette sighed and gave her mother a warm smile. “I think……I think I’m home.”

After their bags had been brought up and she’d had a refreshing hot shower, Bette climbed into her new bed and dialed the young woman she’d dreamed of on the plane.

“Bette?” said Tina, after a few rings.

A rush of warmth surged through New York’s newest New Yorker and she gushed when she spoke. “Hey Sweetie. It’s me. How are you?”

“Oh, Bette. I’ve just been spending the day thinking about you. Missing you. How was the flight?”

“T, it was great. My mom got us first class seats. And to be honest, that’s about all I really remember. I passed out. It was like, the next thing I knew, we were in New York.”

“I’m so glad you made it in safely.”

Bette leaned back against her million pillows and smiled. “Did you think I wouldn’t?”

Tina sighed. “Bette, being away from you…a bucket load of worries have been hanging around me all day. All I can do is think about you. Worry about you. Worry if you’re okay.”

“Well trust me. I’m okay. Are you?”

“I’m okay. I’m okay now. What is it there like 1:30 in the morning?” asked Tina.

The mention of the time seemed to make it feel that much later. Bette yawned and her eyes closed. “Yeah. It is.”

“You sound so sleepy,” Tina said.

    “I am. Aren’t you?”

“I guess so. Just couldn’t really rest until I heard your voice.”

Bette sighed. “Well, let’s get ready for bed, T. Are you in your pajamas, yet?”

    “No. Not yet.

The soothing timbre of Bette’s relaxed voice sent a gentle vibration down Tina’s tensed spine. “Well, what are you waiting for? Come to bed with me, T.”

“Just a sec, let me grab something to put on.”

Tina rushed around the room and pulled a quick change before sliding into her own sheets. The fresh smell of freshly laundered bed clothes tickled her nose made her think of her mother. She got an image of Tracy Kennard hurriedly washing sheets and comforters in preparation for her daughter’s arrival. Tina was grateful for her mother’s efforts, and felt guilty that she didn’t want to be around the woman that had given her life. But she just couldn’t bring herself to face old Tina just yet and her mother represented all that she used to be.

“I’m back, Bette,” Tina finally breathed into the phone.

“I missed you. You took so long,” Bette cooed.

    “Aww. I’m here now.”

    “Good. Let’s get some sleep.”

“Okay. Good night, Bette. I love you.”

“Love you too, Sweetie. Sweet dreams, T.”

The lovers began a slow and gentle descent toward warm dreams. And on their first night apart in over 6 months, they met the soft embrace of slumber still in each other’s presence.

And just outside of Tina’s door, Tracy Kennard stood with a mug of warm peppermint tea in her right hand. She’d been standing there for a few moments. Long enough for the hot tea to turn warm. Just as she’d raised her left hand to knock on the door, she heard her daughter utter Bette’s name.

Tracy’s dark blue eyes squinted in confusion. Wondering how this Bette girl had stolen her daughter’s attention. How had this girl usurped her importance in Tina’s life?

She knew that if she brought this up to her husband, he’d think she was crazy. While he’d been patient in trying to understand just what about this situation had his wife so upset, Tracy knew that Steven just didn’t get it. He didn’t understand why his wife was so worried. Especially since they’d only been together with Tina for a few hours.

But Tracy was her mother and a mother always knows.

And Tina’s mother knew something wasn’t quite right.

    Something was different.

She just couldn’t get her mind around exactly what it was.

As she slumped away, her shoulders drooping with dejection, a mug of cooling peppermint tea in her hand, she hoped that time would bring the answers she herself couldn’t seem to find.

    1. Hello MTS, I have just finished consuming your latest adorable adventure. I feel like an addict ready for my next fix. Your words haunt me as the bonds between mother and child are examined. Janice is only now starting to appreciate the joy that her daugther can bring to her life. While Tracy knows that something is different about her child. Tina isn’t helping matters with her secrecy and odd behavior. The mirroring of these events is awesome. As always, MTS, you provoke and makes us all think. Brilliant. Just loving it all. many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    2. Tina’s mom is so close to guessing what is going on with Tina. It is nice to see that Bette is getting the royal treatment. Before Bette was all stressed but now she is more relaxed and now it is Tina’s turn to stress out.

    3. I’m so glad to see you post! You have no idea how much I love the two other stories that preceded this one. Thanks for taking the time to continue with this series. ;D

    4. I was only thinking yesterday how much I missed this story, was even going to PM but then thought ‘no pressure’ and here u r. That was ssssoooooooo intense & I hate them being apart as much as they do. I wanna say PPS but no pressure. Thx.

    5. I’m happy you see you back. I loved the others two stories of Roommate. Which way you may go with B&T. I hope without much drama and a happy end for this two as a happy married couple.

    6. Hey MTS, It is so wonderful and a real treat to have you back on the site and posting more of this magnificent melodrama. I just adore everything you have wriiten. Can’t wait to immerse myself in your delicious drama. I’ll be back when I’ve read this new chapter. SO excited that I can hardly make sense of the words. Yippee!!! Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    7. Such a amazing suprise to see you posted again! Great chapter. I think it’s safe to say that a lot of us have been in this situation with their mother much like Tina is right now. I can only wish her the best. Please post again soon.

    8. I am glad you brought us the next phase of the story. I am liking that Bette and Janice have this time to bond and get to know one another. Tracy is being a rude unsupportive bitch to Tina and then wonders why Tina won’t talk to her. Maybe if she treated her with a little respect Tina wouldn’t feel so terrified of being herself. Fantastic writing!
