    The Set Up (12)

Tina was taken completely by surprise with the question, always stunned by her girl’s rampant curiosity.
“Uh … I … What are you talking about, hunny?”

“You know. When you stay here all by yourself. When I go out or with friends or something,” Angelica shrugged, picking at the remaining food on her plate. “Sometimes … I just think it must be scary to sleep alone in a house. I never did it yet.”

Tina smiled at her daughter who suddenly found the contents on her plate to be of the utmost importance. Tina leaned her head onto her hand, admiring Angelica’s honesty. So she responded in kind. “Sometimes I get lonely – being without my little girl, that is – but it’s nothing compared to the joy I feel in sending you off with your friends. I don’t get scared, hunny. I just worry about you, and I hope that you’re safe and happy.”

“Is that where the saying comes from – like mother like daughter?”

Tina chuckled as Angelica finally looked up at her again. “I guess. And I’m sorry if I did pass that onto you. I don’t want you to have to worry.”

“Or maybe did I just come out as a baby with all my own personality traits? … Mom? … I think it’s nice that we’re the same a lot.”

Tina’s heart melted, trying not to show how touched she was at her daughter’s statement. Keep it together. Don’t cry or she’ll try to change the subject. God, look at her … When did she grow up? How did she get so old so fast? “I think it’s great too, hunny.”

And when Victoria came to pick Angelica up, Tina was hearing that same sentimental phrase replay in the back of her head. She got down and gave her daughter a big hug at the door. “I love you, baby,” she whispered, “Now be safe and take care of your Aunt Vicky for me, will you?”

“Mom,” Angelica grinned like she always did when Tina said that. “She looks after me! Duh, I’m a kid.”

“Oh, I forgot,” Tina chuckled, watching them leave as her eyes got a little watery. She’d been under so much stress lately to do the right thing at the right time that her emotions were out of whack. She waved off as the car backed out of the driveway, and leaned back against the door, closing her eyes. Thinking.
