Bette was confused at the tone she’d just heard. “What class?”
“Umm, just a dance class.”
And with Tina’s blush, Bette became very curious. “What kind of class, T?”
“I had low self-confidence, okay?” Tina laughed, fiddling nervously with the hem of her skirt as they turned another corner. “You can’t make fun of me.”
“I won’t. And if this is going where it sounds like this is going …”
“-Bette.”
“I wouldn’t be laughing at you, that’s all.”
Tina let out a long sigh. “Years and years ago – when I was scrambling, really … and years before I met you … I took a … how should I say this? A chair-dancing class.”
Bette scrunched up her brows, just staring at Tina until a little smile grew from her lips. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“If this is you making fun of me …”
“No,” she insisted, gripping a little tighter to the wheel. “But you … took a class … and you learned how to give someone a lap dance?”
Tina was quiet.
“That’s what you’re telling me, right? – Not that anyone needs a class on that, in my opinion. I mean, you’re sexy as hell all by yourself.”
“Yes! Okay?” Tina blurted, becoming a little nervous. “And I feel stupid for doing it. But actually … it did help me, because I could see that I … did feel … sexy. You know?”
With Tina’s focus purposefully out the window, Bette could see how serious she was, so she kept a hold on herself. “Yeah. I’m glad it did something for you.”
“Yeah, and I’m sure it would do something for you too,” she teased, firing a glance over at Bette. “My god, I can’t believe I told you that. I swore to myself that I would never tell anyone.”
Bette tried to distract her from the defensive comments. “Did you take it with a friend?”
“No. Alone.”
Bette put her hand over Tina’s for a moment as they came to a stop, loving her more than anything. “You’ll never be alone with me. I promise. Even if you want to take a class on hating women – I’ll be there.”
“Well, that’s a little too supportive,” Tina mumbled jokingly, comforted by Bette’s gentle laughter.
