    The Set Up (29)

“That sounds disgusting. Like some kind of disease,” Angelica chuckled, trying to feign sleep as she closed her eyes tight. Her mother definitely was not onto anything.

“You know … the strong, silent type.”

“Shhh! They’ll hear you,” Angelica whispered, both of them just giggling as Bette walked over and grabbed her towel.

“And what are the two of you laughing about, huh?”

“Angelica’s boyfriend over there,” Tina blurted, far too loud for the space they were in.

Angelica turned onto her other side in complete embarrassment when the boys looked over, and held the towel over her head.

Bette looked over, enjoying the tease as she scoped the crowd. “Oh, the blue shorts guys?”

“Okay! Let’s go!” Angelica insisted, trying not to laugh as she pulled the towel up, over her head and walked to the pool door.

They laughed about it all the way up to the room, teasing here and there during their last few days, and remembering it once again after they’d finally arrived home.

“We found a boy for Angie,” Tina teased, helping Shane to mix the pasta sauce for their small dinner party. “He was nice to look at, apparently.”

“Probably gay. We were there for pride anyway,” Angelica insisted, rolling her eyes once again at the ridiculous jokes.

“Was he cute?” Shane smiled, all of them enjoying how easily they could rile Angelica up, and also the quick wit she had to defend herself.

“You know … I thought of sneaking him into my suitcase … but then, he wouldn’t fit. His arms were too big. And his legs … and his-”

“Okay, enough about WonderBoy,” Bette sighed, pulling Angelica hair gently off her shoulders to kiss the side of her face. “Salad, hun.”

“Why do I always have to do the salad?”

Tina laughed, “Because Bette here has to learn how to cook pasta.”

    “I can so cook pasta.”

Shane intervened with the teasing they so easily shared. “Without burning it, or serving us a ‘crunchy delight’ or whatever the hell you called it.”

They all laughed, most of all Angelica, who was just happy to have mothers and friends who were so close with one another. She knew she was lucky in that respect, and many others, too. She had such a great relationship with her parents.

“I love you, hunny,” Tina said gently, putting her arm around Bette to look her in the eyes, “But you can’t cook pasta.”

    “But I can learn.”

Shane and Angelica rolled their eyes at each other while Bette and Tina shared a sweet kiss.

It would be a while until the small party began with close friends, including one of Angelica’s. Once it all started, Angelica sat at her place at the table, and just looked around at all of the laughter and smiles, and leaned her chin on her hands. Maybe if there were so many wonderful people around her, there was hope that she would find a wonderful boy one day. One that would sweep her off her feet and give her tingles like she’d read and seen so many times. She thought that maybe what her parents had wasn’t as impossible as she once thought, and that made her smile.

Maybe one day, she would find true love.

“Hers said Supergay!” Bette added, just as Angelica was brought back to the conversation at the end of the table with roaring laughter. And with the memory, she let loose and laughed to herself, thinking of the splendid memories she would carry with her always.

    5. Such an amazing story. A snapshot of contemporary Americana. Bette is ticked off w/Ralph (who names their kid Ralph nowadays/) just as any parent would be. She’s not embarrassed to stick up for her kid. Bette accepts her own gayness and doesn’t try to hide it as if it is something to be ashamed of even when chastise Ralph in front of his Mom. I love all the thoughts that are in italics so we get a glimpse into their own feelings. Please don’t end this story. Consider bringing us episodes of other moments in their lives. This is one great family.
