    The Set Up (29)

“Can we have the biggest room they have?” Angelica asked mischievously as Bette and Tina simply glanced at each other in the taxi.

They’d travelled to San Francisco for a glamorous vacation – Pride. Angelica had been so supportive that Tina had decided to go after all, and smiled as she looked out the window at all the rainbows on their way to the Hilton.

“Wow, it’s such a big thing here – it looks even bigger than ours.”

Angelica then turned to her mother. “San Francisco always has a better Pride than New York city. It’s just gayer here.”

Bette stifled the laughter that wanted to escape while Tina shook her head and put her arm around her daughter. “I’m so lucky to have you. You always support me, don’t you?”

“Mom, being gay isn’t a choice, and supporting you shouldn’t be a choice, either. It’s who you are, and you shouldn’t accept any flack for that from anyone,” Angelica insisted, looking out the window again. The topic frustrated her sometimes, and Tina let her regroup, leaning back onto Bette. Breathing it all in.

“I love you. And I love that we’re here.” Her tone of voice with Bette was different, and so Angelica didn’t even flinch. She stared out the window while her moms spoke with each other.

“Me too. It’s just … I don’t know. It’s different, isn’t it?” Bette answered, chuckling as Tina mockingly gasped at the way Bette was caught staring down her shirt. Neither said a word because they weren’t alone. Bette held Tina close and tilted her head down so they could just enjoy that they didn’t have to drive in all that traffic. “I love being here.” Then Bette changed her tone and spoke loudly again, “With both of you. And Angelica, your support means the world to me. I’m serious. You’re a really wonderful kid, okay?”

“K,” Angelica said, only glancing back at Bette and her mother.

Fourteen and ambitious as ever, Angelica looked out to the ocean just apparent through buildings, and dreamt of life as a marine biologist. She smiled a little, interested as always in the nature of that curious field.

And with the teen otherwise occupied in her dream world, Bette gave Tina’s hand a squeeze and looked at her. And that look told Tina that she’d planned a few special things for them to enjoy their time together.

    5. Such an amazing story. A snapshot of contemporary Americana. Bette is ticked off w/Ralph (who names their kid Ralph nowadays/) just as any parent would be. She’s not embarrassed to stick up for her kid. Bette accepts her own gayness and doesn’t try to hide it as if it is something to be ashamed of even when chastise Ralph in front of his Mom. I love all the thoughts that are in italics so we get a glimpse into their own feelings. Please don’t end this story. Consider bringing us episodes of other moments in their lives. This is one great family.
