The Sound Track of Our Lives

    “I think you are ready.”

“I don’t think I am,” Bette holds the guitar gingerly in her hand. She studies it instead of making eye contact with the woman in front of her. “Charlotte, I am not ready.”

“Not ready for what, Bette?” Charlotte scrunches her nose, not sure they are talking about the same thing.

“I am not ready to move on with my life.”

It was Charlotte’s turn to study an inanimate object, “What are we talking about here? Are we talking about you playing in front of an audience or you moving on without Tina by your side?”

Bette strums the guitar absent mindedly, “Can we be talking about both?”

“I guess. What are you going to do?”

“If you say I am ready then I must believe you.”

Charlotte reaches over to the guitar placing her fingers across the strut to silence the strumming. “That is not what I meant.”

“Nothing. There is nothing I can do. I have no right to demand anything!” Bette pulls the strap off her shoulder. She put the Fender into the stand. She paces back and forth, “I have no right to even be in the same room with her. Do you realize that when I was fucking the carpenter Tina was carrying our child? Her child now, only her child.” She suddenly picks up the closest lawn chair flinging it into the pool. “I am such a fuck up!” she screams. Her curls blow wildly in the sudden wind lending her a crazed look.

Charlotte stands calmly next to the raging woman, “Feel better now?”

Bette turns to look at Charlotte before she hurls herself into the pool.

“That isn’t going to help!” Charlotte yells at the submerged Bette. “You just ruined your expensive shirt.” Bette ignores her company, choosing instead to study the sky. “Fine,” Charlotte throws up her hands and walks back into the house.

She catches the tale end of her phone ringing. “Hello?” she asks the dead line. “What is going on, ten missed calls?” Just as she pushes the voicemail button the phone rings again. “What is wrong?”

“It is about fucking time!” Alice’s voice was full of strain. “Are you still at Bette’s?”

    3. Just full of surprises, aren’t you v? I felt as out of my element as Alice, too bad I didn’t have the good doctor to sweep me off my feet. But I quite enjoyed it none the less.
