The Sound Track of Our Lives

“I don’t think I’ll be able to handle another spin.” She holds her head for dramatic emphasis.

“This one slow one, you can handle this.” When she releases her hold on Alice she could hear the soft sigh that escapes the blonde’s lips. She waits for Alice to turn around as Trisha Yearwood’s voice comes over the sound system. Charlotte holds Alice close. “Look at them,” she tilts her head, “they are in their own little world.”

Ever since I lost you, baby
    I’ve been here and there
Lookin’ for some peace of mind
    Can’t find it anywhere
    I went down to Tunica
    Played me a little blackjack
Saw a wino on the corner
    Gave my winnings back

“Ya,” Alice mumbles not really looking up at Bette and Tina. She couldn’t help but be a little muddled by the way Charlotte was holding her. Alice got a little lost in the smell of the good doctor’s hair care products. Her face flushes as she presses herself closer.

If it was just money, baby
    I could make it
    But living without you
    Can I take it?
All I see ahead of me
    Is just melancholy blue
‘Cause I ain’t got no future
    Without you

    I went down to Austin
    Lots of beautiful people there
Could have had a better adventure
    I just didn’t care
    Got a job in California
    They sure liked my style
But there’s somethin’ ’bout that California sun
    Reminds me of your smile

If it was just money, baby
    I could make it
    But living without you
    Can I take it?
All I see ahead of me
    Is just melancholy blue
‘Cause I ain’t got no future
    Without you

Now and then, I go back to Biloxi
    Whenever I feel brave
Visit that little country church down there
Lay some flowers on your grave
You sure got a hold on me
I don’t know what to do
    I ain’t got no future
    I can’t see my future
    Without you

As the song stops both couples continue to sway to music. Tina steps out of Bette’s arms. She feels reality set back in. This woman was her ex, the woman who betrayed her. Somehow it didn’t sting as much as it should. She inclines her head in the direction of the door.

Bette nods in understanding. She gives Tina a sad smile, hoping Tina can see how much this had meant to her. Thank you, she tries to say with her eyes. She watches as Tina slowly turns leaving the bar. Bette had seen Tina walk away from her too many times not to know the pain in her chest was the familiar feeling of her heart breaking.

Tina stops with the door open. She looks over her shoulder and mouths something to Bette.

Bette takes a step forward as Tina leaves completely. What had Tina said? I miss you? I will miss you? Bette fights with herself. Should she go after Tina? No, she decides to leave this night as it was. Perfect.

She gathers Charlotte and Alice. To Bette Alice seems to be acting a little stranger then normal but she is too lost in her own euphoria to pay much heed to it. She sits in the back seat of Charlotte’s car a silly grin plastered on her face.

Alice continues to glance back to Bette. “What did she say?”

    “Nothing,” Bette grins.

    “What did you say?”

    “Nothing,” Bette grins.

Alice looks at Charlotte for an explanation. Charlotte studies Bette’s grin through the rearview mirror. She winks at Bette.

“Someone please tell me what is going on?” Alice pleads.

“Ok,” Charlotte agrees. “Right now Bette is Eliza Doolittle.”

    “Who?”

Charlotte shakes her head, “You can dress her up but” she cuts off the statement at Alice’s glare. “Ok, My Fair Lady.”

    “Yes, what about it?”

Charlotte shakes her head, “You are going to make me burst into song, aren’t you?”

Bette grin wideness and Alice nods. Charlotte sighs and begins to sing in her best impress of Julie Andrews.

Bed, bed, I couldn’t go to bed.
My head’s too light to try to set it down.
Sleep, sleep, I couldn’t sleep tonight,
Not for all the jewels in the crown.
I could have danced all night,
I could have danced all night,
And still have begged for more.
I could have spread my wings
    And done a thousand things
    I’ve never done before.
I’ll never know what made it so exciting
Why all at once my heart took flight.
I only know when he began to dance with me
I could have danced, danced, danced all night!

Alice grins along with Bette. Yep, they could have both danced all night. Damn that was confusing.

    1. Valerie — absolutely hilarious — you know i love your writing and this is a wonderful interlude — maybe the Julie Andrews moment was inspired by the Bucket woman ??? loved it babe — you are SO talented

    2. Val…you have me fucking lmao! I am now picturing J as Charlotte..the whole time I was reading it…I saw Jwet. thanks for the post and I hope that B & T will start working it out.

    3. Just full of surprises, aren’t you v? I felt as out of my element as Alice, too bad I didn’t have the good doctor to sweep me off my feet. But I quite enjoyed it none the less.
