The Sound Track of Our Lives

“It is like we don’t even know you!” Alice says dismayed. “You have this whole secret redneck life.”

“It wasn’t a secret you just never asked how I grew up,” with that Charlotte saunters off.

“I suppose we should follow her, at least she knows what to do.” Alice gets out of the car and opens the back for Bette. The dark haired woman is uncharacteristically pale.

“I cannot handle seeing her with another woman.” Bette grabs the blonde’s hand, “Al, it will kill me.”

Alice pats the soft hand to reassure her friend, “Bette, the only woman I have seen come in or go out was Charlotte. I don’t think you need to worry about wannabe cowgirls.” Alice takes a firmer grip on the hand. “Come on Bette, we will be there for you. We need to be there for Tina too.” She is rewarded with the famous Porter smile. The cold shaking hand in hers belies the warm smile.

“Let’s do this,” Bette says with an unfelt confidence.

Once they enter the bar, Bette drops Alice’s hand. She stands in awe of the sight in front of her. Tina, her Tina, is dancing. She looks stunning in her simple peasant skirt and white tank top. The men around her are all smiles but Tina’s face is pinched in concentration. She dances effortlessly, her steps in perfect time with the rest of the dancers. Bette could tell from her distance point across the room that Tina’s mind was not on the dance. Tina is lost in thoughts and doubts. Bette knew this face too well, she had seen it often enough at the beginning and the end of their relationship. Tina needs her help. She steps onto the wooden floor entirely without plan or thought, just the urge to erase the troubled look off that lovely face.

Tina’s stomach drops. She forces herself to focus on the crowd. Not surprisingly, Bette is walking towards her. Her former lover stops ten feet from her, wordlessly asking permission to proceed.

The time to be bold was now. If there was ever a time that she felt the strength that coursed naturally through the mocha goddess standing in front of her, she needs to tap into that now. Is it possible to gain strength from osmosis?

    3. Just full of surprises, aren’t you v? I felt as out of my element as Alice, too bad I didn’t have the good doctor to sweep me off my feet. But I quite enjoyed it none the less.
