Two Days On Our Own
She walked across the hallway and heard a quiet snoring. She smiled to herself and then repressed a chuckle, motioning to the living room and removing her sunglasses. It was a very warm morning and the yellow sun had already enlightened the whole house.
In the living room, on the couch, Dante was still soundly asleep. He wore black Bermuda shorts and nothing else, and while his left hand was strategically positioned under his head, his right hand was on his stomach, holding a baby monitor.
Alice stopped, just a few feet away from Dante, and observed him attentively, her arms folded.
Dante’s naked chest was covered with scars. Alice’s smile slowly disappeared as she watched every mark attentively. She narrowed her eyes and mouthed a “what the fuck”.
In his sleep, Dante groaned and scratched his cheek.
Rapidly and silently, Alice ran through the room and hid behind the corner of the hallway. When she heard nothing, she peeped in again.
He was still sleeping.
Alice approached him again, cautiously this time, unsure about what to do. She had suddenly realized why Dante never took off his shirt. She had mistakenly thought that he wasn’t in a good shape, but in fact he was in a perfect shape, tonic and brawny.
She had been wrong. He was only embarrassed by his own aspect.
Alice bit the inside of her cheek, uncertain, shifted her weight from one foot to the other, and finally opted for the front door.
Once on the porch, she rang the doorbell and waited patiently.
”…And I don’t want the world to see me
Cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am…”
Dante jolted on the couch and sat up. He groaned again and brushed his hand on his face. Then he watched the baby monitor. Both the twins were awake, but so far they were still quiet and tranquil.
He realized that someone was at the door and felt terrified for a second. Alice? Could it be Alice, again? No, Jesus, don’t do this to me, a voice inside of his head said. Oh, come on, you have fun with her, another voice replied.
