    Uncharted Territory

‘What do you know about cutlery?’

‘Nothing, but I know everything about you.’ She whispers back and caresses my hand briefly with her thumb before she looks over at the pianist who strikes up a new song. Observing her I still feel lucky to have her by my side. Despite everything that feeling never got less. My lips curve up when I notice the glances people, men and women, throw at her. In the beginning it used to make me insecure, but overtime I figured out that she’s completely unaware of the attention she gathers and that made her only more irresistible to me.

‘Isn’t this the wine we had at our wedding?’ Helena asks breaking the silence after the waiter leaves our desserts.

    ‘I think you’re right.’

‘We didn’t know each other yet when you got married. What was your wedding like?’ Bette asks.

‘Not nearly as romantic as yours.’ Winny chuckles. ‘Peggy cut Helena off because she didn’t agree with her choice for me. So we ran away from the UK and got married in Paris, I was still studying then, we spent our last money on dinner in a fancy restaurant and a B&B somewhere in the banlieue.’

‘I find that quite romantic.’ I say scooping the quenelle of chocolate mousse from Bette’s plate and placing it on mine. Chocolate always elicits her migraine attacks.

‘If I would have to do it again, I would probably do something like you two.’ Helena says. ‘It was so romantic and we had such a great time at the beach.’

‘Would you ever get married again?’ I ask in surprise.

‘Why not? At first, I have to admit, I mostly did it to despite my mother. I didn’t really see the surplus. But later I started to believe in it I guess… Ironic isn’t it?’

‘I don’t know how it’s possible that you always manage to say something nice and something insulting in the same sentence.’ Winny shakes her head at Helena.

    ‘It’s a talent.’

‘Ha-ha cheeky Tina.’ Helena comments and turns to Bette. ‘Anyway what about you?’

    ‘No.’

‘Oh come on. You can’t possibly say that with so much certainty. Of course no one wants a divorce but eventually the pain will subside and someone else will come along. Human beings are not meant to go through life alone. We’re herd animals.’ Winny challenges.

    1. Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.

      My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”

    2. Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.

They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.

In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….

      Thanks for the chapter…
