    Uncharted Territory

Winny grins. ‘That’s true what she says, she managed to annoy the guy within the first fifteen minutes.’

‘Well, what do you know!’ I tease.

‘Helena, how did it feel when Winny moved out of the house?’ Helena says hiding her sadness behind her mocking tone, impersonating their mediator. ‘Well Francois, I will tell you how I felt, first I called the nanny to take Maddy out for the rest of the day, then I asked the butler to pour me a whiskey and then to decorate the house and after that I called all my friends to invite them for a party, because it felt so bloody good.’

‘She leaned back with that smug smile of hers and I thought the guy would send us out instantly.’ Winny completes the picture, shaking her head, used to Helena’s shenanigans.

‘That’s my point.’ Bette argues. ‘What’s the purpose? And why? To make Helena relive that moment all over again and to add salt to open wounds? To make Winny feel guilty? Or to satisfy his curiosity and his bank account? I don’t understand.’

‘When she turned serious and actually answered the question, I finally realized how deeply hurt she was and could understand some of her actions and reactions better. So yes, for me it certainly has added value.’ Winny replies motioning at the waiter for another wine.

‘I think for us couples therapy could have been beneficial, to deal with the challenges of married life and to become aware of any possible unhealthy patterns.’ I say knowing Bette won’t like it. Her adamant stand against any form of therapy is nothing new for me, I admire her strong beliefs and stands but sometimes it’s hard to make her look at things from my perspective. That unwavering attitude put us stuck more than once.

Putting her glass down, Bette shifts in her chair. ‘I have a problem with the concept of seeing counseling as some kind of holy grail. In the end it depends on the will and devotion of both parties.’

‘Bette would you rather have a drink with me at the bar while we let them continue to agree on ways to pick our brain.’ Helena jokes before turning to Winny. ‘Bloody hell, we went to the divorce mediator a couple of times, do you think our divorce will feel better for me now?’

    1. Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.

      My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”

    2. Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.

They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.

In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….

      Thanks for the chapter…
