Uncharted Territory
‘She’s here.’ She says as her phone chimes. ‘Why don’t I take Maddy to her and you can go the bar over there, we can have a drink if you’re in the mood.’
‘Sweetie mommy is here, I’ll see you soon ok?’ The girl gives me a sloppy kiss and I let go of her hand as she settles in Bette’s arms.
The gravel crunches under my feet when I enter the terrace that leads to the charming wooden café with white and green canopies. Opening the door the smell of fresh mint tea welcomes me and I spot a free table at the window. Taking off my coat I sit down and order two Chardonnay. At the playground beyond there are two kids seesawing, challenging the pivot point with every upward and downward motion. No, we don’t have any other plans. A bit further to the right, next to the pond is the bench where we used to sit and read when the apartment would get too hot during the summer. Sticky summer nights in the city where the smell of melting asphalt would linger in the air and she would buy me ice cream to cool down on our way home. How little did we know about life, love, and where it would take us? Sometimes we would make a detour to see the lights of the Eifel tower on Champ de Mars, where a lonesome violinist would play in d-mole. What could possibly go wrong?
When the door opens, Bette walks in and makes herself comfortable in the chair opposite of me. ‘I wonder if Winny is ok. She looks really tired.’
‘The separation is taking a toll on both of them.’
‘I’m sure it’s a fucking nightmare.’ She sighs and takes a sip of wine. Her light make-up and her hair half up half down always give her a softer expression. ‘Maddy fell asleep the moment I put her in the car seat.’
‘You’re really great with her.’
Looking down at her glass she smiles faintly. ‘It’s easy when it’s for a few hours.’
‘Before you came here, they went away for a weekend and Maddy spent the weekend with me, we had so much fun.. and Renee of course, she taught her to play cards. Time just flew by. Before I knew it, it was Monday.’

Thank you for the chapter, i really enjoyed this one. Sometimes Tina need to stop overthinking
Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.
My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”
Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.
They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.
In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….
Thanks for the chapter…
Great chapter!
Loved the discussion about marriage and how Bette thinks about it. I also believe in a lifetime commitment.
I soooo love Helena in this chapter! :)
