Uncharted Territory
‘It’s an amazing opportunity, but do we really want this?’
‘What’s not to want? I mean look at us…’ She says taking Maddy’s hand. And I look at her as her face glows while babysitting our friends daughter. I sigh. Sitting down on the edge of the fountain she holds Maddy as she tries to reach for a boat that’s passing by. ‘Another year in Paris. You love the script, you said the budget is a dream and …’
‘I know how impulsive you can be.’ I interrupt. ‘Can you really say you won’t change your mind? Because I’m really not in the mood for another long distance relationship.’
Noticing the change in my timbre she looks up at me with a defensive look. ‘In order to be in a long distance relationship someone would have to leave.’
‘I’m trying to be considered here, not offensive.’
‘No you’re afraid to make a decision because there’s a chance it might go wrong again. I already told you not to worry. I’m not going anywhere and I just started enjoying my time away from the gallery, I have no intention to return any time soon if we don’t decide otherwise.’
‘I know what you said.’
‘So what’s the problem?’
‘Ok so you really don’t mind to stay another year in Paris?’ When small hands slip into mine and sleepy eyes look up at me, we both look at Maddy and I lift Maddy on my lap. ‘Are you getting sleepy?’ She nods and rests her head in the crook of my neck with her thumb in her mouth. ‘I think the ponies are sleepy too.’ I smile against her temple.
‘I really don’t, besides it’s not like we have any other plans.’ She says and as a cloud blocks the sun she puts her sunglasses on, turning away abruptly she takes her phone. ‘I’ll see where Winny is.’
Earlier this week we got into a heated discussion about something… I don’t even remember what it was about, I just remember that the next day on the phone we laughed about it and later on she walked in with a box of chocolate that she fed me way later in bed. Last night I took a walk and ended up at her doorstep. The smile that greeted me when I walked in welcomed me like the sun on a rainy afternoon. Joining her on the couch we ended up having an all American night as she calls it. We ordered pizza, drank Coke and watched movies whole night until we fell asleep on the couch. ‘Bette…’

Thank you for the chapter, i really enjoyed this one. Sometimes Tina need to stop overthinking
Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.
My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”
Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.
They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.
In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….
Thanks for the chapter…
Great chapter!
Loved the discussion about marriage and how Bette thinks about it. I also believe in a lifetime commitment.
I soooo love Helena in this chapter! :)
